Pulling engine, how to support trans.
« on: July 19, 2015 - 06:12:54 PM »
Hi guys,

I'm pulling my tired 318 for a 360 and since this is a fairly easy swap I'm going to pull it through the hood and no go underneath.

Does anyone have a great idea of how to support the trans while the engine is out if the car? I assume someone has an idea here before I mock something up.

I want to pretty up my engine bay while there is no engine in there so it will be a good amount of time till it goes back in there.

I used a sissor-jack during dismount...
Then a metal rod under the trans connected to the torsion bars using exhaust clamps...which allows you to move the car...

Agreed, ratchet strap.  I have personally done this with success.

Just some long bolts through the bell housing and a 2x4 across the frame rails.

Don't neglect the counterbalance difference between the 318 and 360.

A 360 is balanced differently then a 318.  The 360 has a weighted balancer at the front of the engine and uses a weighted torque converter at the back.  In order to use the 318 torque converter, you need a weighted flex plate designed for the 360.

318/340 engines are internally counterbalanced at the crank. 360s are externally counterbalanced. You will need correct harmonic balancer and I believe also correct balanced flywheel.

The harmonic balencer is on the engine already.

I need to research the other two. Does it matter that the block is a 72?

Look for a B&M weighted flexplate for a 360/904.  I assume the 318 had a 904 behind it that you are still going to use?

Compare the balancer from the 318 and the 360.  You'll see that there is a large weight on the 360 balancer.

So if I run this flex plate I can run my stock 904 converter and I require no more parts for the swap. How does this plate bolt up? Between the flywheel and the converter?
