So if I run this flex plate I can run my stock 904 converter and I require no more parts for the swap. How does this plate bolt up? Between the flywheel and the converter?

Flex plate/flywheel bolts to crank. Converter bolts to flex plate.
yes that is all you should need.

As long as you have the correct weighted harmonic balancer for the 360, the new flexplate is all you need.  The flexplate bolts to the back of the crankshaft.  Unbolt the original flexplate and bolt on the new one.  Use some thread lock on the bolts and on the converter.

I have the harmonic balancer so I just need the flywheel. Cool.

I would double check that the 360 is not internally balanced, that will lead you to the correct flexplate.  I had a 408 stroker build out of a 360 that was internally balanced but had an externally balanced flexplat and shook the whole car.

If it has weights are on the crank, then it is internally balanced and you do not need weights on the converter.  If not, then you need weights on the converter and the plate should have a large notch out of it.

To throw one more into the equation.
If the 360 you are putting in is a later model 5.9 Magnum, I believe their counter balance weight is different also.

The 360 is a pre-magnum '72 unit. Unfortunately I acquired it without a torque converter or flywheel so I will need to figure out if it is internally or externally balanced. If it was externally balanced I need to pick up a new flexplate. I am just making usre there were no 360's that were internally balanced as I don't want to make a mistake.

Does the harmonic balancer from a 360 externally balanced motor visually look different from a 318 internally balanced model? If I posted a picture could someone easily identify it?

Just pull the oil pan and look at the crank for weights.  These are pictures of an internal balanced crank.

The 360 balancer has a huge weight on the front.  I just googled "360 harmonic balancer" and a bunch of pictures showed up.  Here's one.  You can see the huge weight.

All factory 360s were externally balanced. If it was built as a performance motor they could have then neutral balanced it then. Like if forged pistons were added. If it is original or just basic rebuild then most likely still external.

Compared the two engines yesterday and as presumed I will need the flexplate.

However I am going to check the condition of my torque converter when it is out of the car. If it isn't looking too great I might just opt for a new one.

I would suggest a new torque converter because then you can match the stall to the cam, etc.  Here is where I got mine, they are very helpful.  http://www.accperformance.com/

Ok glad you got the balancing sorted.

Are you ready for the next issue(s)?

The drivers side motor mounting is different. Found out the hard way 25 years ago when I did the same swap. Spacing between the mounting flanges is different. Back then I used a stack up of thick washers to compensate. Since then I welded on spacer bushing.
Also if you intend on using factory exhaust manifolds the will need to be 360 sets. 318s will mount but the manifold will shroud the ports.

I believe i previously welcomed you to Mopar land.  :screwy:

I mitigated these problems already. I'm a do everything at once kind of person I on my parts list I sent away I had 74 - 360 mounts for both sides, I know you can just add some washers but I have been undoing all the Band-Aid fixes the previous owners have done so I am going to do it right with 2 new mounts.

As for manifolds I have long tubes that should bolt right up, The ones I bought a couple of years ago weren't spectacular but they will do the trick right now.

I already picked up my corporate blue engine paint, I am going to give my k-member a once over to pretty it up too. there are also a couple of brackets I need to see what colour they were from the factory:

1. Power steering pump bracket was blue? black?
2. K members were always matte black?
3. alternator brackets were blue?
4. Engine mounts were black?

1-4 black  -  they assembled the engine and then painted it without brackets/alt/pwr steering

Engine and everything is out! had to stop there though the garage gets too hot to work on after early afternoon.

I am now down to painting some of the components and the last few things.

Confirmed the converter does not have weights. Is there any easy test to see if it is still in good working order?
