In 70 49 state certified vehicles had an open vent into the right frame rail... California cars captured the evaporating fuel vapors & plumbed them to the engine crankcase, when the engine was started the vapors were drawn into the intake & burned... In 71 to conform with federal emissions rules Chrysler expanded the use of the evaporative controls to all vehicles sold in the US...Mostly the system worked... But there were a few crankcase explosions due to the vapors igniting... In 72 Chrysler went to a Charcoal canister similar to what GM & Ford had been using since 70...
