Looks great! What "led capable dimmer" did you get and why wouldn't an original switch work?

The potentiometer  style oem dimmers don't have the  smooth range of and electronic dimmer . Electronic  dimmers are solid state and are designed for LEDs .

It's not a direct swap for oem dimmers , I had the modify the output shafts and add a separate grounding circuit  and switch to turn on the dome light.

But from the front it looks like  the factory dimmer  ......

where do you buy these? How much are they? I am thinking this would be good for my Speedhut gauges.

Does the factory knob fit onto the shaft?

It's not a direct swap for oem dimmers , I had the modify the output shafts and add a separate grounding circuit  and switch to have the dome light on feature  , the shaft is a full round  spline shaft , you have to mod it to a half circle to accept the factory knob
But it fits every where else great .

I put in a full cycle timer for the dome light circuit  so my dome lights and Courtist lights stay on for 15 secs  when the dome on switch is pushed ..

So how did you add a separate grounding circuit and switch to have the dome light on feature? I am running speedhut gauges which come with a small rotary dimmer switch. I was thinking to use the factory dimmer switch from the dome light and probably 1 or 2 instrument lights (need 1 light to illuminate the switches). My first inclination was to put the speedhut dimmer switch underneath the bezel where it would be pretty much out of sight, however if I could use this device I think it would be a nice install.

Well, on a 73 challenger the is 3  positions on the factory dimmer . Power in , power out ,  courtesy ground.

So for the. New Dimmer you  :

hook up  the 12v + in. To the in ( my case was black/y)

Hook up the 12v  + out to the  ( my case brown)

Hook nothing to the ground  terminal on new dimmer if  your new dash sockets are already grounded .....

Then the factory courtesy. Ground wires( my case the yellows)   Both get landed to one side of a new single pole momentary switch , the other side of the new switch gets a new wire to chassis ground .

Long story short.... The two yellow wires are a open ground loop , when grounded it grounds the dome light and turns it on .  That circuit contains 3 switches ( left door ,right door, dimmer ) any one of the 3 grounded will turn on the dome .

Very nice job there.  I had my air box restored but looking at yours I wonder if it was worth the money.
