Rear Spring Spacers
« on: July 28, 2015 - 07:30:31 PM »
I am thinking of changing the stance of my Cuda to be simular to this one.  In talking to the owner, he lowered the front with the torsion bars only and the rear with a spring spacer.  He had to add a longer extended shock from a '70 A-Body.  Has anyone had experience with a set up like this good, bad or ugly?

Why did he have to change shocks? the shocks position in relation to the body hasn't changed, the axle has but the spring, shock mounting plate & shock are all as original...

Lowering blocks work but they act like a lever attempting to twist the spring.... Not the best for performance but honestly lots of guys use them, even vehicles that see competition use though they rarely use more than a 1" lowering block...

They are effective at lowering a car. As 1 Wild R/T points out, the shock doesn't need to be changed ( the A body shock is the same length as an E body shock too, but truck shocks are longer) and it can lead to spring wrap issues if you drag race on prepared tracks with sticky tires using stock springs, but even that can be overcome with the proper parts.

If using lowering blocks, I'd suggest using a billet or extruded version instead of a cast version. Billet and extrusion will bend if shock loaded whereas cast will cracked and potentially come apart. That means no cheapy part store versions. Pick them up form Speedway Motors or another reputable vendor.

The owner said the shocks he had were being extended past their limit so he got shocks for a Chrysler Imperial that were extended beyond his old ones.  With a 2" spacer, wouldn't the body to spring distance be further than without?

Nothing in the relation to the spring mounting, or body cross member changes. Picture it. The car stays the same but only the rear axle moves up 2" NOT the springs.

The shock plates on your picture all look stock to me.

To me the shock plate does not look right. All of mine are much flatter and the shock mounting stud is around an inch further up and in than how that one looks.

Another trick for shortening shock requirements is to flip the mount plate. This is another reason why I say those don't look correct. When I've flipped the mount, I needed to clearance grind a small section of the radios for the leaf to sit flat against it. Looking at that mount, you'd have to cut away most of the shock mount to accomplish a flip.

What rear end is under the car?  If it's a 7 1/4, it will have a smaller shock plate.

Both the Cuda in the pic and mine have 8 3/4.

Those shock plates do look strange.

Those are correct 70 only shock plates. Even AAR's and T/A's use the stock (flatter) B Body ones, but the ones shown in his picture are correct for 70 only E Body.

Hmm, imagine that. Glad I don't have a '70.
