Hydro Boost for Challengers or Cudas
« on: July 31, 2015 - 12:39:00 AM »
I drive my 71 Challenger as much as I can, and whenever the weather is nice, it comes out of the garage. I felt the need to be able to stop as well or better than modern day cars as the highways around here are usually fairly heavily traveled, and I needed to be able to stop better than I was with my disc, drum setup. I decided to go disc, disc, and I met a professional mechanic who did these hydro-boost systems on all kinds of cars.. I have had it in my car now for almost a year and my car stops on a dime..A few other Challenger owners have driven it . I actually let people drive my car so that they can experience it (most late model challenger drivers have never driven the real thing) . Most say they can't believe the difference. When I did the braked, I also did the power steering box and now I can make a U-turn instead of having t do a three point turn. The handling is better, and I know I can stop when I need to. I have never seen another Challenger or Cuda with the system and I have looked at  alot of cars. I go to Carlisle every year and have never seen one in anyone else's car. I am attaching a picture of my car and most importantly the hydro boost sytem if anyone is interested.

I got one in a box waiting to be installed. Great that is working well! Did you use the stock PS pump, no mods? I just ordered new gaskets and o-rings for mine.

Yes, it uses the stock PS pump. I am going to get a list of all the parts needed to do it correctly, brakes, pads, parking brake cables, etc. and put it on this site so other people may want to do it. With these cars you need stopping power so that you feel confident that you can drive your car and stop.

There are a few guys running Hydro Boost set up on the site.

Are you using aftermarket calipers of stock caliper is on the front?

I have heard the Hydro boost can be touchy with single piston calipers.

Hydroboost work very well. I installed the one on the purple Challenger as well as one of my Borgeson steering kits. As far as touchy pedals go, I'd be leary of using this system without 4 wheel disc. Otherwise, single pistons up front are fine.

This is definatly a great solution , especially with long duration cams producing low manifold vacuum .
Not so cool if you do not have power steering though ,but I guess you can upgrade with Firm Feel at the same time .

I have hydoboost on my car.  It is unbelievable.  Love it!  Easy to install.  Stops on a dime.  One of the best mods I have done.  I do have larger calipers and rotors all around.  It is a bit expensive, but worth it.  No regrets on this one.

I know of at least 4 E body cars equipped with Hydroboost , seems like a far simpler & effective solution , especially with big cams & low vacuum . .too bad my car has std steering !

For hydro-boost you remove the original brake booster? Then supply boost with power steering hydraulic pressure?
What kind of $ are we talking about to do this mod?

I'd be leary of using this system without 4 wheel disc.
How come? I always thought the rear drums were more than adequate for an e-body's lightly weighted rear tires? I actually have an inline restrictor to reduce pressure so the rears don't lock up first.

Yes, you replace the vacuumbooster with the hydroboost setup, I paid $800 for my system at Hydatech: http://www.hydratechbraking.com
Then I also got a new Wilwood brake cylinder for $249. Good company, great service.
