Flooding issue
« on: August 01, 2015 - 12:17:30 AM »
Had an issue today after short drive locally, tried to start after car had been sitting for 20 min & had to crank awhile before she roared to life, didn't think much of it at the time. About another half hour later I went for another short drive, car started OK at first but then kept stalling . Only way to restart was crank with foot to the floor & blow out the huge cloud of smoke before continuing & then stalled in driveway again at home. When it's cold it starts really easy (auto choke), but seems after running at full temp for a while to flood up.
I popped the air cleaner while it was running to see if choke butterfly was open & appeared ok, butterfly is vertical even though it seems very sloppy & could move quite easily.
So should the autochoke (it's an Edelbrock 600) keep the butterfly firmly in place when fully open or should it be a little sloppy ? Just wondering if autochoke is misadjusted perhaps. One other thing I noticed recently when fine tuning the timing & idle mixtures was that the secondary butterfly shaft has some lateral slop & alters the idle if you wiggle it.
Appreciate any input you gasmonkeys can help with.

Choke is OK , probably has more to do with the heat soaking upwards from the intake & boiling the fuel over , you need some kind of spacer to minimize heat into the carb , Brad &I saw an awsome product @ Carlisle

Never thought of that, kind of makes sense actually. I'll check it out.

Care to share the product name and/or company website?

So, plain old vapor lock? I bought an aluminum spacer, was it a bad idea? I see that the carburetor is so hot you can barely touch it. Should it be so hot?

I brought the card back from Carlisle but I have not seen the card since but I will look for it , alum is great at transferring heat BTW
this is a link http://hotrodregal.com/cool-carb-technologies-making-carbs-cool-again/
http://www.coolcarb.com/
these are made of a unique material that reflects heat & keeps the carb much cooler , they also have intake gaskets of the same material limiting heat transfer to the intake , something like 25HP gain with the carb & Intake isolated & cool with no other changes !

Just ordered a 1/2" phenolic spacer , hopefully  will solve my heat sink issues, wait & see I guess.
