K member ID
« on: August 01, 2015 - 11:56:03 AM »
I apologize if this doesn't go here I wasn't sure where to put it.

I have 2 K members, 1 which is in the car and one which came with my 440.  I about to begin rebuilding the K-member and wasn't sure which one was the True big block K member.

According to the VIN the car was a slant 6 car, but the K member looks exactly the same as the big block K member.

According to the pics are these both the same K members?  If not which one is the big block.

K-member in the slant 6 car: (unless it was replaced at some point)

Supposed to be a big block K member that came with extra 440 and trans

Thanks

Well, Neither is a six cylinder K.... Beyond that Small Block & Big Block both can be mounted on the same K... However most but not all HP Big Blocks had a skid plate to protect the oil pan... I don't see evidence of that on either of your K members...   The K with skid many call a Sixpack K but practically every 440 got it, fact is I've never seen an original 440 E body with out it.. And I've seen plenty of 383 cars with it..

Good news, it's available & can be added to your K..

Thanks for the info and the link.

I'll pick up that skid plate and weld it on.  Since they are both the same, to make things easier i'll just rebuild the K member that's out of the car and then swap them out when ready

Long as your welding    http://www.firmfeel.com/e_body_mopar_k_frame_reinforcement.html   Buy the kit & weld everything.... Absolutely necessary, probably not, An improvement? Yes.....

Hey, I just reread that link & for $75 it included a skid plate and the reinforcement brackets....   Probably not a stock looking skid like the Dr Diff one I linked but it'll do the job & the reinforced steering box mount is a big plus...
