Mecum challenger crazy!
« on: August 01, 2015 - 08:21:16 PM »
Went to mecum harrisburg all weekend looking for something to buy when I come across a 73 challenger I think I may be able to afford. 73 non rallye 318 car, buckets and console int is decent and all orig green. F8 green engine bay that did not meet the real bad repaint that was not even close to match. Drive door I could put my fist through the front section, inner fenders full of goop and hiden patches to hold on the hood hinges. This car went to 17,500 and didn't hit reserve.

That car "presented" well on t.v. They acted like it was survivor quality.

That's not Mecum's fault...It's the owner of the car setting the reserve after watching too much Barret Jackson :roflsmiley:

It may not have even gotten real bids. Remember Mecum reserves the right to have their own people bid on the cars ( up to the reserve) in an attempt to get real bidders bidding.   :2cents:

No kidding? I did not know that. You got to be a cool poker player to bid on something and not get swept along by the momentum?

Very true.  That is something you have to look out for when you see cars bid high but not hit reserve.  Was that bidding what they call "real money" or just shill bidding?
When you are selling a car at the auction and the actual real buyer bidding is getting to a certain level but still short of reserve, they will really twist your arm on stage trying to get you to drop the reserve.  On the other hand, I knew someone selling a car at the Mecum auction in my area last year who was up on stage when his car was up for bidding, his reserve was something like 37K and the bidding got up to 35K.  He was thinking, you know, I think I will let it go for that, but they wouldn't let him drop the reserve.  It wasn't "real money" at 35K.
The whole auction business is a bit shady and I am wary of ever selling a car at one, and even though I bought my '71 at an auction and did well, I'm inclined to quit while I'm ahead and likely won't buy at auction again (though never say never).

Well I don't know if I would call it shady. By having shill bids they are trying to help both the seller and themselves by luring in real bids. They want to sell the car and collect their commision. You as a seller want to sell your car and go get drunk   :drunk:    :smilielol:. The important thing is if your a bidder to know whats going on and not get caught up in the excitment.

I imagine the "house" would have to stop bidding once a real bidder places a bid or obviously after the reserve is met :dunno:

I expect the house would bid against the real bidder until the reserve was met unless another bidder stepped in.

To my way of thinking if the house continued to bid once a real bidder steps in, well thats just wrong. And if I was a bidder and found out that happened on a car I was bidding on, I'd be pretty mad.   :stomp: Especially if I won the car. I'm going to do somemore research.

Well "ALL" bids under the reserve really don't count, it's if the house continues to bid over the reserve that's where there's an issue....You're not going to win under the reserve.
