Decided to upgrade radio in 70 Cuda
« on: August 05, 2015 - 08:02:40 AM »
I bought one of those custom auto sound retro radios as I was informed that it would just drop right in my dash with no problems....... well there were problems.

Apparently these aren't for the rally dash which I guess mine has.

I called custom auto sound back to let them know that my radio wouldn't work and that they did not have one for my model I would have to purchase the secret audio thing.

I didn't want to do that and figured I could just do something to make the radio that I want work.

I thought about just taking it to a radio place and say make this look right but then I really just didn't want to pay the money for it.

So I had some free time and have made some adapters for speaker installs in the past and figured I'd just take my time and see what I come up with and hopefully it wouldn't look horrible.

I think it turned out okay I got a little happy on some of the cuts and there's some little things that I would change but for the most part it looks fine to me and I pretty much have 0 dollars invested in it.

I got the mounting bracket down pretty good but then I got concerned about the cosmetic look of the faceplate.

I was going to purchase some vinyl stickers and just put that across the front but I didn't think it would look good so I found a can of some black plasti dip and figured I'd give that about 6 or 7 coats I think that did the trick.

Anyways I hope this helps some of you guys that may have been looking for something like this I did the rough measurements below and I'm by no means a perfectionist on that but it works and the uneven cuts are concealed.

Nice job... However CAS is full of crap, that radio wouldn't fit any E body without some adapting.... There are different radios depending on options, AM  AM/FM  AM Cassette, Etc  but the std dash vs rally has no effect....

But they got your money & thats all that mattered to them....

Wow, that really looks great!  And you have some serious skills!  I have not heard of any retro radio that fits perfectly.

Thanks....and I agree on the "got my money part".

Hopefully my misinformation helps someone else make a better informed decision.

Well finally got it wired up and out in the daylight.  Matches better than I'd thought .

I've only got 2 kicker  6x9s in the back for now. Sounds great....a lot more bass than I'd figured !  May do something  in the kick panels for a front stage but I really was jus lookin for tunes while cruisin.

The radio seems pretty powerful .

Just to update..... after trying to adapt two three and a half inch speakers in the single - dash location failed I tried another 4 by 10 speaker and it was too big so what I ended up doing was using one of the three and a half inch speakers and a spare tweeter I had.  I installed the appropriate bass blockers on them and it really sounds better than I imagined now... not great like you would have a modern front stage but still it's a lot better/filling.
