Vin# trouble

I was wondering if this is a common problem out there. I just noticed the other day that my vin# on my dash doesn't match the vin on my door. :unobservant. Is this a problem for me now or later???

Definitely not good.  Not sure how bad though.  Somebody around here has probably delt with it.  Which one is on your title?

Which one is on the cowl and does the cowl vin match your title?

Hummmmm, the dash is the one on my title and a little history on the car. I just got the car back together and running after a complete resto. I had to take it to the CHP to have the vin verified so the DMV would register it and issue tags. It seems pretty strange to me now that the CHP wouldn't have noticed since their job was to verify the vin. :dunno

Most typically the door has been replaced. 
If this is the case, no big deal.

If the vin on the dash match's the title but neither of those numbers match the cowl and radiator support, then you have a slight problem.  The car was not original to your title.  This is considered a re-vin and you have to tread lightly.  If they state your in gave you a title after verifying the car with the title that's great !!  However, when you are going to sell the car you should let the purchaser know that these do not match as that can really cause some problems.  Mostly with the possibility of the body being stolen.  Federal crime, Federal databases, fines, prison, etc.

I'm very curious now which of these boats you are in.

I hope the cowl and radiator support match the title. If they do, you can get a new door one printed.  There are places that can make one for you legally.

Ok, I went and checked the cowl and radiator support. Also checked the fender tag and it matched the dash, but both of those are removable. The numbers on the cowl and radiator support don't seem Long enough to be vin#s. only 8 characters on those and the vin is 13. Am I looking in the right spot? Can't find any other numbers.

The 8 number/letter combination should be something like BO123456.  The numbers matching your vin.

The last 6 numbers in the Cowl and Radiator support numbers will the the last 6 of the VIN.   The Cowl and Radiator numbers are only 8 digits long.  The Factory (B or E) and the Year, 0, 1, 2, ,3, or 4.  Then the last 6 of the VIN.

We would be glad to have you show us.  Maybe that will help.  Maybe you are looking at the wrong numbers.
