turn signal sometimes stays on but dim?
« on: August 09, 2015 - 09:40:55 PM »
Thought this was weird? Not all the time but once in awhile the right turn signal indicator is on but very dim. I only notice it at night its so dim.   I've never check the turn signals outside the car to see if they were on too? I click on the right signal on and off and it goes away? It's a new turn signal switch , well 5 years old now but..?  :dunno:
Flasher unit going south?  :dunno:
Ground issue somewhere?
Bulbs?

Is this one of those situations where the switch turns the ground off and on while power is always there?

I am thinking it is a bad ground a power for the running lights is coming back through the dash lights to ground .

Is it dim when using the signal or when the turn signals are off?

Then i tend to agree with cp. Power is finding its way to gnd through your turn signal light.
Tough to nail down that kind of fault.  I'd start with going over all my connectors and grounds. It will be tedious. Probably won't find a smoking gun.  :2cents:

I had some time to mess with this....
Grounds...
The one on the front mounted to the rad support , I removed it , looks clean I sand papered it anyhow and re installed. No change
I have 2 heavy wires( not stock) from engine block to body.
The rear bulbs /running lights the sockets on the taillights are grounded to the housing right? They all work function normal so grounds should be good right?
Rear side marker lights were is the ground for them? Tail light sockets as well?
Something new I noticed....
When I first switch on the marker lights the right signal on the dash is bright for a split second then goes dim like I mentioned before.
Even though the turn signal switch is relatively new ( 5 years old, ignition switch in steering column replaced same time) it could still be bad right?  :dunno:
I put moved the battery to the trunk last spring but I had this same issue before I did that.

Does sound like feedback/short from somewhere.. I'd start disconnecting things one at a time until the issue goes away starting with the bulbs moving back toward the turn signal switch. You will know the issue is at or beyond the last component that was removed. Could be a bodged socket pinched or chafed wire somewhere but something is grounding out IMO. I've even seen broken bulb filaments weld themselves to ground inside the bulb a couple of times.
