Column lock release - sometimes car wont start
« on: August 10, 2015 - 12:03:06 PM »
1973 Challenger, sometimes when I turn the key there is nothing, if I move the column lock key release back and forth it will then start.
What is this a sign of ? what needs to be replaced ?

When you say you turn the key, does it go to the ACC position and then to the start position?

With the column lock in place you cannot move it far enough forward to start.

Otherwise you may have wiring that is pinched.

key to start nothing, then key back, if I move the column lock lever back forth, and retry, most times it starts

Sounds like it might be time for a new ignition switch.

Only way you will truly know its to pull apart the column and see what's going on.

:iagree: with a volt meter you can test at the plug at the bottom of the column to see if you have voltage to the yellow wire to the start relay
