Color on R/T tail panel
« on: August 13, 2015 - 04:38:07 AM »
FT says there was a black bumblebee stripe on the car from factory, does that mean the tail panel was black too? I removed some paint on the tail panel down to the metal but could not see any sign of black paint there.

In 1970 an R/T would have a body colour tail panel regardless of which stripe  :2cents:

 :iagree:

The T/A was the only model that would have had a blacked out tail panel.(in 1970)

Just curious, but I have an unrestored 1970 R/T with the black out tail panel trim piece. The body is painted underneath the trim piece, but the appearance is that it's blacked out. The car was ordered with the V6X longitudinal R/T striping.  Maybe the black out trim piece was part of the V6X code?

1970 Challenger's never had "blacked-out" trim...that's a 1971 R/T deal... :2cents:

Wasn't sure on it. Seen several 1970 R/T's at local shows with that trim piece.

SE's used a separate tail panel trim piece but they were painted argent.  Post a picture of the trim piece you are talking about.

Car is in shop right now. In the 1970-1971 passenger car parts catalog the trim piece is shown for all models. On illustration page 23-242  for the Challenger R/T J-S it is item 18, part number 3444175. That is the trim piece on my car.  I thought it was standard on R/T's.

Look for A63 on your fender tag. That would explain it.

R/T SE or R/T with A63 get that trim panel & whether some choose to believe it or not at least some of them came from the factory painted black....

I bought my R/T SE in 1975 from the 60 year old original owner.... I didn't question him about the black trim panel cause it wasn't the big question then that people make it these days.... The car was basically untouched...

My uncle bought his 70 R/T SE new it too had a black trim panel..... This has been discussed many times, I find it funny that so many experts who weren't even born when these cars were built have indisputable answers....

The final argument there's no part number for a black trim panel.... Well I can show you dozens of assembly line parts that don't have part numbers...

End of the day you won't change peoples minds....

1 Wild, I am at the point where I have to refinish the panel on my R/T SE. I think I would prefer the black and your word is good with me. I think I'll go that way. It just makes sense to me the black rear panel would match the black R/T grille.

Just remember if it's an A63 car the tail trim panel is NOT body color.

I seem to remember a post (on moparts) regarding the tail light area and black-out.

for the most part all R/Ts got by color as stated above.
but somewhere along the way (i think at hamtramk plant) there was a directive to paint that area with blackout (long as not a SE)
it happened for a while then it was stopped.   I think it was towards the end run of the 70 model year.

I very clearly remember seeing this blackout applied on a very/very low milage original 440 RT.  the car was red/red with a horizontal body stripe (not bubble-bee one).

Not an expert here -   just something I recall.
