440SOURCE WATER PUMP HOUSING...JUNK?

My stroker runs 190-200 highway or town,I have read that the housing is very restrictive on the bottom hose .Any experiences wuth this and suggestions for an upgrade?

I think they revised the housing and hogged out the lower hole several years ago

190-200 is NOT hot by any means.   You are running right where you need to be

I run the Source right hand outlet with my 528 Hemi and 11-1 compression. I have the stock 340 # rad but recored with a high efficiency core. It runs right at the 195' thermostat opening all the time even in over 100 degree weather in city traffic. The opening is smaller than the factory opening but sometimes it's okay to slow the flow down so the coolant passes through the radiator a bit slower. JMO.

                                            :iagree: Very good point about slowing down the flow many people miss. Don't know how many times people have told me, yea I removed the thermostat and it got hotter.   :roflsmiley:        :rebel:

I can't really comment on the value of the 440Source housing. However there area plenty of factors that go into the cooling of the engine. Did you swap the housing for previous one and something changed?  A water pump HOUSING that has no moving parts would be the last place I looked for a culprit. that being said, if you are running the temps you posted I would not be concerned. A thermostat change may help you out if you want it to be lower. I also dont know what gauges you are using to read these temps. Consider the gauge itself may possibly be off as well.

Just a few things to consider before pointing a housing.

I found the most restrictive part on mine was where matched to the engine.  I just gasket matched and then just went down into the housing to make more even.  But I took out a 1/4 to 3/8 inch around the hole to match the gasket.  It seemed like alot to me.  But mine runs 190 to 195 in florida with the ac on in florida.

My 440 source water pump and housing keep my 440 right at 195*. I have a 195* t-stat. Idling in summer traffic, the needle doesn't move up at all. Summer temps in my area is like 80-85*.

The one I used led me to not want to use another one. Bolt holes were off. The engine runs fine but the manufacturing issue with the holes made them simply not worth the time.

I agree with the other posters that 190 - 200 is where you want to be.

Below is what I did to bring my 440 down from 230 to 180:

1.  Dialed in 36 deg BTDC total timing (probably the one item that had the most effect on temp for me)
2.  Installed lower radiator hose with metal coil inside to prevent collapse at high RPM
3.  Moved transmission lines from radiator to separate trans cooler
4.  Replaced after market aluminum water pump housing (440 Source with smaller openings) with original cast iron water pump housing
5.  Installed Miledon water pump
6.  Installed Mr. Gasket High Flow 180 Deg thermostat
7.  Installed 3 core Champion Aluminum radiator with dual electric fans

Now 440 Challenger runs all day long at 180 deg in super hot Florida summer weather!
