DOT3 Brake Fluid or Oven Cleaner will remove enamel paint.

Hey guys..quick update, I just checked it out and find the numbers matching from the door to the cowl..just need to track dowm radiator support and fender.  The previous owner painted under the hood and it looks like he covered em up good.  Any suggestions on removing the paint?  Its chipping pretty good so I could probably find a way to scrape it off, but I dont want to make the numbers illegible.

Thanks again for all the help!

Darren

Radiator supports get changed if the front got hit... That said look for bumps or depressed areas in the paint.... There are no numbers on the fenders, there are numbers on the fender tag but it's screwed to the left inner fender & may be missing... Or wrong... The cowl number matching the door helps allot.... And with that matching your DMV could probably issue a state authorized VIN...

Take the screen off and put a mirror underneath to read it from the bottom.

Thanks guys, I'm gonna try to track them down tonight..worst case sometime this weekend!

Side note, do you think anyone is looking for this dash/VIN tag?  The dash is is rough shape, just curious if you think anyone may be hunting for it.

Thanks,
Darren

It's possible but usually when the dash pad gets pulled out of a car & sold it's an indication the car has been parted out..... But there are plenty of cars that started to get parted out & before things got to far the value of these cars made cars that were considered parts cars viable to repair..... I know I parted some cars in the past that we considered rusty junk that these days would be considered gems... Plus the fact the pad is junk probably means it got swapped along time ago... Who swaps in a cracked pad?  It cracked after it was installed... :2cents:

No fender tag???

So sounds like you have a BH car.  Hope you didn't pay a premium for a BS car.

CA state DOL will probably issue you a state-issued dash VIN.

Post both VINs, someone may have your dash VIN and someone may be looking for that BS VIN (doubtful on both parts).

I hope you solve this issue. The VIN code is what's stamped in major parts locations throughout the car. The dash code should match DMV. Does anyone know of a company that stamps out reproduction dash plates? I thought I ran across one recently on the web, but I can't find it now.

Thanks guys..didn't get to it tonight, but the wife has work tomorrow and I've got a free day, so I'll be in the garage foolin around.  So far it looks like it was the BH model that it shows on the title, so that should be good.  Now I just need to track down any other supporting documentation and see what California DMV thinks (scary huh?).   Thanks again for the help and I'll post what ai find tomorrow!

Title, and other body stampings (got a fender tag?) should prove to the CA DOL (DMV is usually for driver's licenses) that it's a BH and they should issue you a VIN.

I have no idea what DOL is, here in California the DMV takes care of drivers license & vehicle registration...

Washington DOL = Department of Licensing   California DMV = Department of Motor Vehicles    They are both good at making you wait and taking your money.

Hey guys..I stripped the paint on the fender and radiator support and I'm not finding anything.  I don't mind continuing to remove paint, as long as I'm doing it in the right area.  Any thoughts?

Sorry for the late reply..I've been super busy and then tried to post pictures a while back, but they were to big.  I finally got my computer up (while my hands and arms aren't all greasy).  I tried the "backeast datatags.com" place, but they're out of the office until the 18th.  I'll probably try back then too..I'd like to get all of the tags matching.

Thanks,
Darren

The number should be right there in front of the radiator. Thats a ton of paint! May be the radiator support was replaced? Nothing at then driver's side wiper area? I'll take a pic of the areas where my #s are stamped if it helps.
