What is causing my transmission to make this awful sound?
« on: August 17, 2015 - 11:40:40 PM »
As luck would continue to have it, the second day of driving my new 72 Challenger (after replacing the smashed headers and leaking power steering gear) I have a nasty noise coming from near the transmission(727 torque flight).  :pullinghair:

Sound started after I began to drive from the muffler shop. Transmission is working fine except for the nasty sound.  Got home and pulled up into the driveway. Sound goes away when I put it in Park,Drive 1st or 2nd. Sound comes back when put it in Neutral or drive the car. Goes away when I stop and put it back into Park. Does not come back until put it in neutral or drive it again. Weird!  :o

Sound from the inside

Sound from under the hood. You can hear it every I put it into neutral(25 seconds into the video).

Going to get it back up in the air so I can try to isolate where it's coming from.

Anyone ever encounter this?

I wonder if the crank is moving forward a little with load on the converter & hitting the inspection cover with the converter bolts

I don't know what a particular gear would have to do with it but it sounds like the starter gear touching the ring gear.
Possible the snout of the starter is broken or not bolted up snug...

I would be suspicious of the muffler shop work. look around underneath for anything they could have moved or bent, especially around the convertor area. Looks like as the engine torques over something is rubbing, (could it be the fan) If it didn't do it before, nothing just instantly failed.

cheek your motor and tranny mounts since you bottomed out the headers, they could have sheared.

:banghead: WAY TO EASY GUYS,the headers rubbing on the torsion bar in the second video.look like it vibrates of the bar with more speed and shifts.  header musy be bent outward when you nailed the payment with them.  :pullinghair:

my bad, those are new headers right.even then, they are still hitting the T/BARS.PLUS THE SOUND SURE SOUNDS LIKE IT AND IT LOOKS LIKE A VIBRATION ON THE BAR IN THAT SECOND VIEO.  :2cents:

:iagree: I'M with this also if it's not what i posted above, after listening again just enough lode to put the starter drive gear into the flywheel ring gear.

Got the car back up on the ramp and it definitely sounds like the sound is coming from near the starter. Going to pull it out now...

Like Neil suggested , pull off that tin cover and look for convertor bolts contacting the cover.

Just looking, but is the old starter gear fully retracted in the housing? I had that happen to me years ago and it made a high pitch whining sound.

Not sure why changing out the headers would make the converter bolts to start hitting?    :dunno:

Next stop, removing the tin cover to see what can be found. A sound like this should definitely be leaving a mark somewhere.

The sound started after I replaced the headers and stock starter. Perhaps the new starter is not fully retracting into the housing although you would expect to see rubbing marks if that was the case right?  :dunno:
