changing speedo gear in transmission
« on: August 21, 2015 - 05:06:49 PM »
My speedo is off because I have a new taller tire set and new rear end gears.   Can I change speedo gears (new tooth count) without removing the trans - erg- can I do this as a new*** mechanic w/o Killing myself or the car?

Yes, very simple, unbolt it and slide it out.
Slide the new gear in, paying attention to the clocking.  It's clearly marked on the housing.

I haven't done it in years, but I remember having trouble figuring out the "clocking". The speedo gear housing is an off-center cam made to accommodate different width speedo gears. I use to put the gear in and rotate the housing trying to "feel" for the speedo gear engaging the tailshaft. I wrecked a couple of speedo gears that way by not having them fully engaged or having them "over"-engaged. Obviously I didn't know how to "clock" it properly. The "tick" marks on the housing - is there a definitive method for aligning them for a specific speedo gear? What is the proper technique for "clocking" those tick marks? :dunno:
Cheers!

That's cool! I just didn't remember seeing the gear teeth number ranges on the speedo gear housing - must of been covered over in grime or something?? Thanks!
Cheers!

Don't forget to drain some fluid out of the trans....or be ready to clean up a mess.

Be careful, there are long and short shaft gears, you need the long one.
