Can 1970-71 Rallye Clock Work In 1972-74 Dash???
« on: August 23, 2015 - 08:40:46 AM »
Morning.  I am restoring a 73 challenger dash  I am going to be cloning the car as a 1970.  I have a 72-74 Rallye Clock on back order right now.  However I saw that the 70-71 Ralley clock is in stock on Classic Industries Website.

So I'm thinking maybe I can just purchase a 70-71 clock instead of the 72-74 clock.

Can anyone tell me if I can put a 70-71 clock into a 72-74 dash???

I put the clock photos side by side for comparison.

It will bolt in no problem, however  the adjustment is done with a cable, that cable goes through the wood grained facia... So You'll need a 70 facia, 70 speedometer, 70 plastic lens, adjusting cable knob & retainer nut....

Is it possible to get the cable and just let it hang out the back of dash?  Bit of a hassle to adjust time, but it could be a work around.

My first thought about letting the cable hang out the back, is that the clock will work better.  Damn cables get in a bind at times and don't release properly. At least mine does.

You are right about the bind..it is a pain trying to turn the knob.  He probably should get the cable and knob to set the clock.  Looks like the later year clocks are hard to find.

Hi guys.  Thanks for the feedback.  Yes the 72-74 clocks are hard to find. Classic industires doesnt know when they will get them in, so im trying to find other options. Im not familiar with the 70 clock and cable. Can someone elaborate more on how that works? If you have picture that would be great.

Thanks!

70-71 clock set cable comes off the back and there is a hole with set knob through the dash.
72-up the set knob in straight through the lens on the face of the clock.

70-71

Awesome JayBee :ylsuper:!!! That's exactly what i needed. Im thinking I'll just let the cable hang out the back then since i dont want to drill a whole through the front cover.   Thanks dude!

When you need to reset the time, disconnect the battery and wait until the time is correct before you hook it back up. Instead of using the cable.  :D

Well ... just found out I have a 72 and up clock and speedo in my 70 Challenger ... always wondered what those two "knobs" on dash were "suppose" to do.
Have wood grain for 70 with two knobs .. but clock and trip odometer set knob through the clock face/gauge.   I guess I might get a ticket from the originality police .. but I don't care ... love the car way it is ...

   :roflsmiley:

Good luck with your install!!
