right rear tire scrape
« on: May 25, 2005 - 02:38:38 PM »
I have a question regarding my 1972 Barracuda.
When I'm under a full load (ie, a full tank of gas or more than 1 passenger)
and hit a bump or sharp dip in the road, my right rear tire scrapes inside
the wheel well.
I replaced the shocks all the way around with KYB's. What can I do to
stiffen up the rear suspension and still maintain the same ride height?
New leaf springs?
Will pinion snubbers help the situation?
Helper springs?

Thank you,
Peter Vuoto

sounds like theres an aftermarket quater panel on the car on that side and the wheel lip needs to be trimmed or rolled

Stiffer or rearched springs will help.Pinion snubber only controls axle wind-up when under hard acceleration.

if you dont want to roll the inner lip on the fender(I wouldn't) then the next best thing is helper springs. I have some coil over helpers on my cuda and really like them- it stiffens the suspension without changing the ride hiegth and they are real cheep

What backspace do you have and what size tires?  Just curious because I am having the same problem on my 72 Cuda.  The only difference is that I dont need a "full load" for it to happen.  :pissed:

You could always go with Air Adjust shocks... make your own ride height!!

I got 15" wheels with a 4" backspace. Tire size is 295/50-15 which looks great and rolled the inner lip of the fender for me.
They probably fit the wheel wells too nicely as I also get a scrape if I corner real hard.

Maybe try some urithane bushings in the spring eyes it may help the rear from moving :burnout:

most of the suggestions with air shocks/helper springs etc are just putting a band aid over a problem and will not help the cars handling, etc.  Maybe you have the wrong backspacing on the wheels?

Ya know, the more I look at it, it seems the rear end might not be centered under the car. It looks like there's more space between the left rear tire and the fender than there is on the right side! Is there a fix for this?

every factory car I havce seen has the diff approx 1/2 off center , you would have to cut & reweld the spring seats to fix it

.....and install the spring relocation kit while you are at it and increase your backspace for even WIDER tires!

As CP said the bodies are NOT centered on the car . I just went thru this same question cuz I thot my rear had shifted to the left cuz when I launch hard it would drive hard right. After checking with several people in the know and they all said the same thing ....one side will be off 1/2 inch or more. I differ with 74 chall on the helper springs (air shox i agree with ) as the coil over helpers on my cuda have made a world of difference in the ride on my cuda without raiseing the body.
the real problem is you just got too agressive on the size of the tires (yes the look great but too fat is too fat) so the only cure I see with out buying new tires is to stiffen the suspension so it doesnt collapse to the point of scraping

coilover shocks will hurt traction with the factory suspension
it also puts more load on the shock crossmember which it is not designed to take & can damage the crossmember
