should i change intakes?
« on: September 01, 2015 - 04:44:28 PM »
Just looking at this intake, its an edelbrock  it is single plane and is the same as the stock intake so my breather would fit. just not sure if I will regret removing the barton type intake on the 572?? and going from a single carb to two would I have tuning issues

thx bruce

single carbs make more power, unless you have a tunnel ram intake.
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

why is that?   :dunno:

twins on a hemi sure looks cool.  Too bad it`s only a 572. Loose any power and you`ll move backwards at the strip...

Single carbs make more power because its a proven fact on dynos. I suspect there is better fuel
atomization and air/fuel flow into the heads, with a single carb.  Rarely see dual carbs at a race track,
compared to big single Holley Dominators.

Well then it makes no sense that Hemi's came with dual quads, same as Fords FE 427's, and least we forget 4 speed, dual quad,  positraction 409. All of which, at one time or another dominated NHRA, and NASCAR.  And back then the corporate bean counters would shave a nickel off the cost of building a car, so they would have gone nuts shaving a carburetor. Just sayin.

Until the late 60s there was no Dominator carbs so to get a larger carb you needed more than 1 , I still own a 4160 style 950 cfm 3 barrel from the late 60s , in Nascar the Hemi used a large plenum crossram intake with a single dominator carb recessed into the middle , not multiple carbs .
like this ....... ok so I downloaded a picture but cannot find it on this puter  :banghead:

I guess you are talking about the bath tub manifold?  I think they made it with at least three different tops.  Here's a pic of one for a 4150 (not the three barrel) which was a 4160, I think.

Worked very well as I recall.  I think Brad needs one of these to top off his engine :)

I'm thinking that you need plenty of carb for a 572 Hemi.  What size is on it now?

Hey ken, yeah haven't fired the motor yet, I asked that question here and the consensus was a 950cfm as it is just a crate motor not the monster you have.

If old school cool counts for anything, I'd consider the 2x4 setup.  Like you said, your motor is not a max effort high HP setup already, and 2 fours just look right on Hemi's in my opinion for what that's worth!
