HELP...odd sound from rear of car
« on: September 01, 2015 - 10:33:34 PM »
I went out for a rip last night and noticed a new rubbing sound as I went down the road.  It seems to get worse when I turn a corner.

I did not notice it until midway through my rip...shortly after doing a break stand.   :burnout:  I know I know.

Tonight I pulled the rear drums, nothing seems amiss with the shoes...there is a fair bit of resistance spinning the wheels rearwards with the driveshaft in...hoping that is normal.

Pulled the drive shaft and the rear spins freely frontwards and backwards.

I can not hear anything rubbing while spinning the tires while jacked up, or with the drums off.

The only thing I can think of is the old bushings for the rear sway bar are moving or rubbing???

Any other ideas or things I can check...

Yeah no kidding man, I am not happy...I was thinking abut taking the car to an out of town wedding we are going to this weekend too...not sure that is going to happen.

I went over the backend of the car tonight with a with a fine tooth comb...and the only thing I found was a wear mark in the rear exhaust pipe going over the rear end.  It was catching on the little bracket welded on the rear.  Not sure that was the rubbing sound...but...

The only other thing I found was a wheel weight that had fallen off.  I also happen to find that wheel wait...so I stuck it back on!

I guess now its off for a test drive tomorrow and see what it sounds like.

Wheel bearing.

Sheldon

or end play adjustment

Would either of these make noise with no load on the rear wheels.

Jacked up the car and could not reproduce the sound.

grab the tire with the car jacked up & pull / push in & out if you feel movement the end play is not adjusted correctly , the corect adjustment is .010 so approx 4 thicknesses of a human hair

You're lucky you still have hair Jason, you'll be able to check that. A lot of us couldn't.  :roflsmiley:

Hahaha funny guy.

So, there is certainly some play there, wiggled it a bit with the wheel off.

But here is the question, what would cause it to loosen off or become loose all of a sudden..could the bearing have gone bad?

As I said above, there is a ton of resistance when you try to spin the wheels backwards.  Is that a sign of something?

The wheel bearings may be original to the car, I certainly have never changed them.

Bring it to the bbq and we'll have a team of specialists deal with it.  :grinyes:

But seriously, it's possible that it's the bearing. Sometimes when a bearing goes bad it will turn one way but binds going the other way. I've seen it on machinery the odd time. Having said that it seems odd that is spins freely both ways with the driveshaft off. That doesn't jive with the bearing idea at all.

With all the work you've done in the rear suspension area lately I'd be more suspect that something to do with that or the change in ride height has caused this issue to arise rather than jumping into mechanical part failure...
I've read your post several times & there's just not enough info to hazard a guess IMO...

Thanks Murray, I will let you know.

I think I found at least part of the problem...

Looks to me like the retaining clip is uhhh missing.  Certainly had a little bit more play then I would like.  SO I adjusted the play and now I guess I am looking for a retainer clip.

I guess there is no real harm in taking it for a spin with out it...not sure how long it the locking clip has been MIA.  I have owned the car fro 20 + years and have never had the rear end apart except to do the breaks.    :dunno:
