On the forAbodysonly.com forum there is a ton of late model hemi swap info. I spent a lot of time there figuring out things for the 5.7 A904 swap in my 74.

Nobody knows the fair price for a 6.1 with NAG1 tranny and harness/computer, brake pedals and shifter? 90k miles on it.
What can I offer for this, (even though I wont use the tranny for now).

champagne taste on a beer budget price would be under 5K  , Probably best to get a wrecked Charger or Challenger with a good 6.1 and trans , would probably be 6K or plus

Bouchillion tells me the VIN from the car a used engine comes from is very important, why is that? I mean, they also tell me I need a new harness and controller system so why do I need the VIN? Could there be a different type of sensors for the cars? Cant an engine be traced back to the car it came from by the engine code?

Probably because the engine ECU is going to be programmed to a specific vin. In order to crack/modify the ECU, they probably need that vin.

I still don't quite understand that, even if I buy a complete new computer/harness? (I could see that being a problem if I use the old stock computer and it need to be hacked). So if I get a 6.1 engine that has no trace of the stock VIN of the car it came from, I can't use it? Don't make sense to me...
And I really need to find this out before I get an engine.

Whoever you are dealing with on the ECU is far better of a resource than I am on this.

Have you tried to order a new ECU from Dodge yet? I would expect the first question to be "....what is the VIN?"

All of this is why I am not even looking at a stock ECU, gimmie an aftermarket.

I'm asking Bouchillon about pricing etc, they are very helpful, seems like a great company, but hard to ask all the questions by mail, as soon as I get an answer, I have another question, and I dont wanna mailbomb them. No, I can not order a ECU, I don't have an engine yet. And I will use an aftermarket ECU, but still, they say the VIN is very important, and I'm trying to find out why. I do have a lead on a 6.1 engine, but I don't know the VIN. (And a 5.7 with no VIN info either) So I don't wanna buy one and be screwed...

I think, not sure though. you need the vin because it has to be " flashed "   :dunno:  Some verifible vin has to be entered in the ecm to make it work, I think.    :clueless:                            :rebel:

Here is an answer from Bouchillon:

The VIN identifies exactly what year it is.....a basic 6.1 Long block is the same from 2006-2010....only sensor connections are differentThere are different sensor connections from 2006-2008 & then 2009-2010  on camshaft sensor , crankshaft sensor, alternator, and throttle body.    that is the issue....so yes we can provide those sensors or if wee have good pics of those sensor connectors, we may be able to determine what it isOn new engines we know the EXACT year and what connector is on itThe new 6.4L and the late 5.7ls require a special cam sensor to make the PCM work, the new one that comes in a new engine will not work...different value

Paragraph above states what I have been thinking. Not necessarily the ECU as the issue but all the required connectors being year specific.

Looks like it says 6.1L in the second picture.

It should also be cast into the block side, aluminum intake. I believe all the blocks are orange too.

It's a 6.1L for sure, trying to figure out what year. owner says -06 but not 100% sure. That clock print to the right seems to say 06 and a month? Block is orange.

Just found this info:
Also, it is federally required that auto manufacturers 'stamp' the vin on the engine block. I know Chrysler stamps the last 8 digits on the vin on the engine block. The location differs by car and by engine

More research, if that is the last 8 of the VIN, its a -06 built in Brampton.
