Market for USED Engine parts UPDATE
« on: September 08, 2015 - 05:48:31 PM »
Long story short.....
I paid an engine builder lots of money to build an engine for me. A 383 stroked to a 496 cu in
He built it, but only lasted maybe 100 miles before self destructing.
He's not standing behind his work, so I'm out a tremendous amount of money.

The car's owner was very understanding and just wanted a new motor in his car which has now been fulfilled. He now has an Indy 502 big block and is quite happy....
In return he's offered to give me back the 383 parts.

My question is:

Are partially damaged parts worth anything ?
The engine dropped a valve and destroyed one piston. The block is cracked so bad it can't even be sleeved.

For sale I would have:

Pair of 440 source heads ...one damaged minimal
Complete 440 source stroker kit, crank rods, pistons, dampener etc...One piston/possible rod toast..
383 Mopar electronic ignition
383 Eldebrock intake
Holley TERMINATOR fuel injection system
aluminum water pump
TTI 383 E Body headers Ceramic coated inside and out

I know what this stuff cost new, but what is it worth damaged or used ? percentage wise from full list ?

Paint and body/engine builder? red flag there... As a buyer, I usually figure good used parts are worth about 1/2 of new/retail price..  :2cents:

Paint and body/engine builder? red flag there...

Thanks....

There was a couple of 'red flags" now looking back....But he races off road stuff, builds his own engines and has an in-house dyno....all sounded good....I found out after that he out-sourced all the machine work....and the main problem was piston-to-valve clearance or lack of :screwy:

I would or should buy it , the heads will likely be fine alum is easy to repair , the rotating assy should be fine also....  I would replace the rod , I bet it is tweaked , it would not be a lot of $$ to buy a rod & piston for it . The rest of the parts should have no issue at all .
Never been a fan of 500" in a 383 block , good for racing not so much for long term street use , but having the piston snap off the head of the valve is a big issue

I haven't seen the parts first-hand yet to see the extent of the damage, I was just asking if there is a market, and what someone would expect to sell this kind of stuff for ?

For example: I believe the heads were $999.00 USD new, would they be worth $400-$500 ?

The fuel injection was crazy expensive and was working perfectly, but who buys used electronics ?

Obliviously I can sell a 383 un cut intake and ignition system, it's the other stuff I'm not familiar with...

I might be interested in the EFI but I have to do some research on the system .
stroker might be worth 50% but you still have to factor in the cost of 1 more piston & rod & balancing so maybe less .
% will vary on the rest of the parts

When I was doing swap meets, it seemed pretty universal that most decent used parts were 50% of new cost. Obviously there are excepts up and down on that as some parts have little to no risk for damage being used or are in high demand whereas some parts almost no one will buy used. Cranks that are undamaged may get higher amounts, Heads obviously still carry value although damaged ones will need a drop in price. Pistons set will have to be at give away prices as would used cam and lifter sets.

You might want to have the parts of the kit rechecked for balance and damage. Once you have this info then you can feel safe in selling parts from a stroker kit. Otherwise I guess it's just someone's gamble.

So the guy didn't do PTV checking eh? If I had contracted with this guy I would have taken the block and thrown it through his window to get his attention. This is one of the most critical parts and he had it outsourced to someone else.

Heck I had to buy specialty pushrods for the correct length and it's spot on. You go with flybynight folks and you take your chances.

If the heads don't have any further damage and they just need the valve replaced you should be able to get 400-500 bucks. EFI, water pump, intake, TTI headers no problem in selling.

I have some more detailed info and would like your opinion on reasonable asking prices.

440Source Stroker crank kit list for $2250 USD . Complete with one damaged piston ?

440Source Heads list for $999 USD. One combustion chamber damaged (will need welded repair) and missing a valve ?

TTI 383 E Body headers cost $1197 CDN PLUS ceramic coating Great condition ?

Holley Terminator Fuel injection list $2400 USD No problems ?

ETC...
ETC...

I got about $10K in parts altogether....at 50% the total should net $5k ? :dunno:

50% of new is reasonable asking price for these parts IMHO.
