Started cam swap - process questions
« on: September 12, 2015 - 09:14:44 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm swapping my cam on a new 360 I picked up. After many questions and cam options I picked one that was suggested to me on the forum a few months ago.

I am at the part where I need to pull the harmonic balancer and just wanted to make sure I was not going to screw it up. How does it go back on after I remove it? Do I just use the pulley screws to pull it back on? Do I need to undo the big crank bolt to pull the balancer and how do you remove that bolt with the engine out of the car?

Another part I need to swap is the distributor / oil pump drive gear from the 318 to the 360. Will it fit? The engine I bought is missing it. After I pull the cam out will it just pop out?

I also need some torque specs on some bolts:
Rocker arm to head bolts
Timing chain cover bolts
Water pump bolts
Timing chain gear bolts to cam
And any others if you can think of them!

As always I appreciate all the help this forum has offered me!

Scott.

Hey Scott
Yes you need to remove the large bolt inside the damper to pull the damper/ balancer off , it is a 1 1/4" socket , you could put a couple of long bolts in the rear crank flange & hold it with a crowbar , or better is an impact & use air but I bet you do not have either !
When installing  the damper you can use a tool that will press it back on or tap it on with a hammer until the bolt threads reach & tighten the bolt up .
The oil pump drive & dist will fit , use a large std screwdriver & twist the drive up out of the camshaft before removing the cam.
I hope you have matching springs for the new cam ?
Rocker shaft bolts are critical do not over torque ever

Perfect thanks! I do have and air tank and an impact so I will fire that up this morning. Once the cover is off I assume the cam will just slide out since no where does any manual make mention of anything more than "remove cam from engine"

Should I put the oil pump drive in before or after the cam is installed?

If your going to use or sell the old cam, make sure you keep the lifters in exact order for a reinstall.

Check your cam brgs while the cam is out to make sure they are still ok & not worn through the babbit coating .
I bolt a 9/16 wrench to the front of the cam for leverage , go slow & roatate the cam & be careful sliding the cam out of the brgs so you do not damage them
I would locktite the cam bolt , once torqued up nothing else should need it

Got the cam in, it seems it had some front to back movement. The old one I removed also had this movement - Does that seem correct? The timing gear/ chain etc... has not been attached yet.

Tonight if I have time I am hoping to get the timing set back on but I need to watch a video of how to do that first. Line up timing marks, put them on, put the tensioner back on etc...

So this was supposed to be a simple trip into working on engines. A nice easy can swap. I have now snapped a rocker shaft bolt.

Just to verify its 30 foot pounds on these bolts? That's what the website chryco posted earlier mentioned.

Are 318 rocker shaft bolts interchangeable with the 360? I have a spare 318 now.

How do we feel about helicoils on rocker shaft bolts?

25 lbs I believe , helicoil will work if cannot remove the old bolt easily . the bolts are the same 318/360 but new would not hurt either , Grade 5 or 8
