Ported Heads

I have a set of ported heads that I would like to put on my 440 block. Is there anything that I need to do or can I just put the ported heads on the block that I have?

What type of ported heads do you have? Are they iron or aluminum aftermarket?

gotta prep surfaces.

bolt them on loosely, with gaskets, and make sure intake will bolt up without any
major gaps.
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

All depends. Will they bolt up? Certainly as long as they're designed for the block you're running. But - engines are matched components working together, or unmatched working against each other. If the heads are ported professionally you should have your intake matched to the intake ports of the heads (also known as matching, or gasket matching). You should also consider changing the camshaft you have as ported heads may want something different than what you have to really make any difference. Beyond that - the valve springs on the heads have to match whatever camshaft you run. If you want a more accurate answer, please provide more details about what you're running now, your plans for the car, and the new heads. Anything will help the answers.

The heads I am going to put on are 906 cast iron heads that have been ported. They have been milled .050" and the valves were totally rebuilt. I got them at a really good price ( free ) . I am going to pipette for CC`ing the heads and piston to find out what size gasket to use on the heads. Will the intake fit or will I have to change the gasket to make it work?

I would like to hope that the intake ports on the heads have been milled an appropriate amount to match the 0.050" that was taken off the decks.  this is required in order to get the intake to line up properly and and bolt down.

Then if the heads are ported, you can check to see if the intakes on the heads have been enlarged to the intake gasket port size.  I am sure they would have been.

Then, as Moper mentioned, you should take your intake manifold and enlarge the openings to also match the gasket ports...that will increase the flow out of the manifold into the heads.

Free is good! Have them checked out completely before installing. Hopefully the intake side has been milled accordingly as Strawdawg has pointed out, or your intake manifold will not bolt up to the heads after installation.
