Any probs with the MSD Ready to run distributor?
« on: September 30, 2015 - 12:30:00 PM »
MSD ready to run distro with MSD 2 coil on my 440:

Lately it seems that I have had a miss that has been getting worse, erratic of where it happens, etc.  Its so bad now it has a hard start, will barely idle, and almost shuts down when I hit the accel.  Runs rough

-Plugs I changed last night.  Same symptoms:  Replaced the MSD coil.  Same issue.
-Checked spark plug wires/boots.  Ok, no burns or arcing.
-Triple checked all wiring.
-Distro is snug at its base.  I did turn the distro base just a little either way to see if it had worked loose:  Makes symptoms worse
-All vacum lines are snug, no leaks or breaks
-Full 12v sitting still, 13.8-higher when engine is running
-Checked plugs. Most are wet w/fuel

I'm thinking the module inside the distributor is shot:  Loss or weak spark had got to be distro related

I'm not getting a flash on my timing light when attached, nor when plug is removed and grounded (checking for spark)  I have only checked number 1 this way, but at least 2-3 of the other plugs are wet w/fuel upon inspection

Any one have a simliar prob wth a MSD ready to run distro?

Just for sh*ts and giggles... check the engine and battery ground straps to make sure they still have a good ground connections... bad grounding can induce all kinds of gremlins! If those are good, sounds like the module in dizzy...

Grounds/voltage are fine.   Re-sanded all grounds, it has gotten worse, as I just tried again: Now no run, but pops bad thru carb.   Has to be the distributor

ok, but I've cleaned up a rotor and cap like you did, but still
a new rotor and cap ran much better.
Beats a whole new disributor.

Assuming there are no cracks in the cap, it sounds as if the module is/has died

Try taking the coil wire out of the distributor and hold it 1/4-3/8" away from say an intake manifold bolt. Have a friend crank the engine over. See if you have a a good healthy spark output from the coil while cranking, just be careful of course.

had a friend's 16 year old get crossway with a coil, and got shocked.
two days later he died of heart failure. Ground he was standing on may
have been wet.

Had a silimular problem. The coil tested well but ran rough. Changed the coil and problem solved. Not sure why it bench tested fine but would not run well in car.

Yep:  Forgot to mention I did check the original coil by grounding.   And I got a new one, no improvement.   I have ordered a new module from Summit
