I just went with a msd and was going to bye the one you have and speed shop told me to stay away from them. They have had the same issues you are having with them.

Having all the ignition components in the distributor is nice but the engine heat seems to destroy the electronics quickly. I think you are better off installing the CD box on the firewall just like Mopar did originally.

 I had some of the same problems when first getting my 340 in cuda going. It turned out to be the tach was the problem. I unhooked it and it ran fine. I sent it out for updated internals ( factory tach).

I was not running my tach, but I have heard the same thing while doing my research
