Camshaft for 499ci 440 stroker
« on: October 02, 2015 - 09:29:50 AM »
Hello!

I need help for choosing cam for my 499 RB stroker.

Car is -70 Challenger with 5-speed manual trans (4th 1.0 5th 0.68)
4.10 rear
Engine:

4.375"bore x 4.15"stroke 440 block = 499cid
Eddy RPM heads, mildly ported
Approx 11.5 comp ratio
Modified Torker II intake with dominator (because needs to fit under stock R/T hood)
Hooker 2" headers with 2x3" exhaust

Comp Cams pro magnum rockers

Do you have similar combos? What cam you use? I'd like to go with solid flat tappet or solid roller.

Car usage will be 80% street 20%strip

Assuming the rear gear is 3.23 or 3.54... The RPMs are a good head but in as-cast form are a little small for the 500" engines. All that means is torque - they'll make great torque. More torque than you can use in at least 3 of 5 gears. The 11.2 compression might be an issue depending on what pistons you've got and how they are being put to use. I'd suggest a solid flat tappet of 240-250 degrees of duration at .050, and lift between .540-.560 after lash. Use an online calculator to figure out what the dynamic ratio is and run a large enough cam to keep it under 8.25:1.

Just my  :2cents: pick a cam that plays well with your rear gear. I too have OD and a 3:55 rear gear and wish I had went with 3:73 as the engine is not " happy" at 2000rpm , or 65 mph, it like 85 mph better but the police don't like it much..... :icon16:

The difference between the 451 and 499 is 10% more stroke. That's a big difference in how a given engine responds to a camshaft. The 451 is basically jusr a big-bore 440. It's a bit easier to overcam the 451, or at least get the symtoms of overcamming.

Oh I agree the same cam in a 451 would be "tamer" in a 500" . All I was saying is choose a cam that fits your combo, including the rear gear or cruising rpm's.

I agree. My concern is that the "right cam" for solid cruise rpms in the low 2000s, will push an 11.2:1 engine into detonation on pump fuel. That's why I suggested running any potential cam choice through a calculator.

Crower solid roller for my 496 is great.

.600/.625  254/258 at .050
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

What rockers and springs (open load/seat load) you use?

Quick update with some harder numbers on a 496 I put together last year. It's B wedge based (383 so 4.28x4.25 but with a shorter rod than the RB 4.15/7.1" rod), 10.7:1, ported Shady Dell Stealth heads, RPM intake, Comp solid flat tappet by Dwayne Porter, Porter Racing Heads with .499/.515 after lash, mid 240s duration at .050. It was designed to be run on factory exh manifolds & exhaust and actually won at Carlise in Stock E body. In that configuration it made 448/458 to the tires on pump 91. The owner recently replaced the smaller carb with a 950, and manifolds/pipes with headers and 3" pipes. It made 480hp/482tq to the tires this afternoon on the same dyno. It pulls 15" of vacuum idling at 800rpm and runs the power brakes too. The secret is to match the entire package. I think your (OP) static ratio is a little high so you'll have to go bigger. If the block has already been machined (meaning for me it's too late for lifter bore bushings) I would go solid flat tappet. Duration of at least 250. Lunati's got a Drag Race solid grind that looks good - 30210917. Comp's Magnum 21-249-4 or Drag Race XTQ294S-8 would be good choices. I think of all of them the XTQ294S would be my top choice.

Crane gold rockers

Had heads rebuilt about 15 years ago, and Chapman Racing Heads
used springs that were about 475 pounds on the open, and around 175 on the close,
I think.
