truetrac noise, finally found it, not sure I can fix it!
« on: October 04, 2015 - 04:02:24 AM »
So, as some of you might know I have been chasing a rattle in my Truetrac diff, on coast at certain speed there was a rattley clunking (sounded like a jam tin full of oil with a couple of lug nuts inside rolling around, pretty loud) not a timed knock with axle rotation, just a rattle, I have chased all sorts of things, had the centre out and rechecked pinion pre-loads all new bearings, its done 2000 miles and has been there the whole time, even changed from an E to a B body housing and axles, tightened the adjustable axle bearings up to next to zero end float.
Well, I decided to grab the back wheels at the 3 and 9, 6 and 12, wobble them just like you would to check the front wheel bearings and tie rod ends etc, well, I found the problem!!!!! wheel bearing are new, tight in the housing and adjusted to have 0.006" end float, have a listen and watch the wheel, whats happening is the side gear in the trutrac looks like its moving considerably in the Truetrac body, its most definitely not the wheel bearings moving. diff oil is clean, no metal.

I have just same noise from Truetrac at coasting to the traffic lights etc...and I also noticed that weird wheel play some time ago.
Could it go away with the Green Bearings, that would be nice to know.

Wheel bearings won't fix it, I was all set to go to them but am thinking twice about it now given they are a round ball in a half round race, until I can sort this out I think it would work the race a little more than the A7 factory type

You might be right about that.

Seems like a lot of Mustang drivers have similar noises from their Truetrac-units, most of them thinks it is normal...
I have been driving now maybe 3 summers/10 000 miles with it and the sound have been same, no change.
Next spring I might try Redline Heavy Shock Proof oil to see if it will silence it a bit.

Wow I'd be pissed if I had that problem with a truetrack.

HP, I kinda am starting to and particularly living out here its an expensive pain the the back side to send stuff back or replace it, freight alone starts to match the price of goods when its not my doing! if I had to wind the windows up, turn the music off, hold my breath and be on a glass smooth road just to maybe hear it, I couldnt care less, but when people come for a ride and they hear the noise they look at me with a horified look asking what the hell is that noise! thats with the music up!

If I had abused it then maybe ok, but I have not done one burn out with it, only ever cruised with my stock as factory 340. blue motor.

You said it's not the wheel bearings but ..... what kind are they? Green bearings or stock tapered? It looks to me like the wheel is moving, how could it do that if the bearing is not moving?

Brad, Tapered factory, the movement is pivoting at the bearing, what is moving is the splined end of the axle, even if I wind the bearing adjuster up tight to have no end float preload, I can still wobble the wheel due to the spline end being allowed to slap around. if I wind up the wheel bearing adjuster to zero it does help support the splined ends through the centre but I would be very concerned with heating and bearing failure

Are you sure the tru trac you have is for stock diameter axles and spline?  :dunno:  Just a thought?
Have you contacted where you bought it or Eaton? Have you pulled an axel to see if it's rubbing on the carrier?

I'd pull the axels and have a good look at the splines? Post a picture if you do?
