Correct Front wheel bearing
« on: October 12, 2015 - 04:44:01 AM »
Need a bit of assistance in finding correct wheel bearings.  I have a stock Cuda with front disc brakes.  Im going to replace the rotors and bearings.  I can find the rotors, but bearing part numbers are confusing.  Im looking at Timken bearings.  From the catalogs, they don't specify disc brakes, but 10" and 11" brakes.  Do the rotor/hub use the same bearings as the drums?
I see Timken part # Set6 for inner and Set2 for outer.  Is this correct?
Which seal do I use?  11" or 10"?  I know the rotor is just under 11 inches.

There's two sizes of inner bearings. You have to determine what year your spindles are first.

Anlauto is correct on the 2 sizes.  I just went through the same issue on my 1970 Challenger.  I received great help from Mancini and MBM.  On my 1970 with Discs,  I used National A17, National A2 and National oil seal 5121.

To expand:
A 1970-71 spindle uses a BR6 inner bearing and a BR2 outer.
A 1972-74 spindle uses a BR17 inner bearing and a BR2 outer.

I can't believe I did not mention year.  It is 1970.

Who's part # is "BR?"  Looks like Timken uses Set2 and Set6 similar to your #s of BR2 and BR6.  And Timken's seal# is 5121S same # as National#.  Now Im confused cuz Jeff you mention A17 on yours.  Timken has # Set17 for inner.

Alan and Jeff, thanks for the info.

First place I checked and no mention of front disc brakes.  Only mention is 9", 10", and 11" brakes.  I know I can eliminate 9".
It "looks" like Set2 and Set6 Timken are correct.  I see BR2 and BR6 is SKF brand at Rockauto.  I can only deduct that 10" and 11" bearings are the same.

Drum & disc use the same bearings. The size of the brakes makes the difference in bearing size.

I did not realize the early spindles were a bit smaller than the later ones.  Or did I get that backwards.

How about the seal?  Different part#'s for 10" and 11" brakes.  Again, no mention of disc brakes.  Bearings the same, but seal is different.  Go figure.

Here is a copy from the Timken catalog.  It does specify disc brakes for 1980-1973.  Older than that, it only specifies 10" or 11" brakes.  Shows same bearings for 10" and 11" brakes, but different seals.  Rockauto lists them backwards from the Timken catalog.  So Im mystified.

You may also want to consider taking the old bearings out, clean them off and read the #'s on them. There's only one size disc that I know of and I bought all the bearings and seals at Rock Auto as Brad mentioned and put them all in over the weekend and they all fit just tickey-boo.
