My 5.7L Hemi Swap + Tremec T56 Magnum

I suppose I'll help kick off the new sub-forum with a little info on what I am doing.


Starting with a 1972 Barracuda, 318/904 that I have owned for 10 years now. It ran well for what it was, 13.6 in the 1/4, but it was time to refresh the car overall. It was taken off the road in October 2014 and I started heading toward a 5.7L Hemi with a 6speed manual conversion. I am a former ASE/BMW master technician and now a  Mechanical Engineer that's built a few different toys. This is my first shake at a major vehicle overhaul, so we'll see how this goes. I will be handling all of the work on the car with the exception of final primer/paint and probably the headliner.

I have two 5.7L engines sitting around here now. One was a pull out from a Ram that has some cylinder issues, this is my mule for some generic parts and mockup. The other engine I managed to score for free. It is a remanufactured [by Mopar] 5.7L that is complete, but disassembled. It was disassembled because a local rebuild company, AER, was doing a capability study for what they would need to do to be able to rebuild that engine. So it sat on a pallet until my buddy that worked there got it for me!

The transmission of choice was a Tremec T56 Magnum [0.63]. This was chosen for it's robustness and it's essentially the end-all option for a transmission in these cars. It's OEM form is the TR6060, found in the current day Viper, Corvette, Challenger, Mustang, Camaro, etc. However the OEM version is not the easiest swap in these cars for a few reasons, such as: shifter location, starter location, output shaft flange and no speedo cable provision.

I purchased everything needed to go from an Auto to a Manual from flywheel to driveshaft from Silver Sport Transmissions. So far they have been of excellent service and all the parts are meshing together well. I will get to actually assembling the transmission in the car "for real" when the car goes out for paint.

Nice! I'll be following your progress. Got the US CarTool stiffening kit also, got the connectors welded in, will do the radiator support and fender braces this winter.

Great project!! I am.putting a 5.7 hemi into a 74 e body as well. If the auto 65rfe computer stuff does not work I will blow my budget but I will put a 5 or 6 manual speed. Does your car was a console shift before?  Mine is column shift so is one my conversion/expense to take into consideration.

Do you mind if I ask how much did you pay for yr tran kit at SST?  Where did you get the trans?

My car was a console-shift automatic. I do not plan on running any type of console with the 6spd. Everything needed to go from a auto to 6spd T56 was in the low $6,000s from SST. Hydraulic clutch, pedals..down to the shifter boot trim ring.

I think budget blowing is a part of the game, my budget is gone, and I don't have the fuel system, headers, oilpan, radiator and lotsa smaller stuff.
