6.1 Hemi in 70 Challenger Conv.

Here my swap thread. The car started out with a 340/727, (original engine was a 318) that I took out and got all fixed up with all new parts, I was gonna drive it like that for a few years then get a Gen 3 Hemi, but I didn't get it ready in time for this summer because of work eating up my time, so I decided to just go ahrad and do the swap now instead. I bought a 6.1 Hemi out of a 2006 Charger, I got the engine with all accessories, a NAG1, pedals, shifter, harness and computers. My main headache now is IF I should use my 727 or if I should go ahead and build it with the NAG1. I really want the interior stock, with the shifter and console, a Charger shifter would not look good in there. But I also want an overdrive....Have 3:55 in the rear..... Hard decision, will make it soon.

I know very little about the new engines, I will learn as I go. I think thats one of the resons I do this, love to learn new stuff. Driving the car is fun, but I seem to enjoy the work more than the driving.

Last pict is the engine swap in my first Challenger in the 80's. 383 to a 440 with a 6-71 blower.
I loved that blower, maybe this 6.1 Hemi ends up with one later.

The Charger shifter is pretty ugly and plastic, a pistol grip would be nice!

Well, I have decided how to go about this. I will start out using my 727. Then later switch to the NAG1. Reason behind that is that I really wanna drive the car next summer, and the NAG1 swap will take more time and a lot of fabrication, if I start that now, my car will be in pieces for more that a year, possibly longer.  I talked to Chris at Hotwire and it is possible to get the harness that I can use for the NAG1 and run my 727 with the same harness, I just have to use 2 different computers, and I can use the one I have for the NAG1. There will be $6-700 extra cost for another computer and 727 adapters etc, but it worth it to me. The big issue, headers for NAG1 and T-Bars is not solved yet. No one makes them. I will get the TTI's that fits the 727/T-Bars and hopefully I can modify the passengers side later to fit the NAG1 (with a right side starter), what I can tell the driver side header will fit from the 727, but I'm not 100% on that.


Btw, somehow I will find a way to shift the NAG1 with my stock shifter.

Hi Sound control,
I saw and episode of fast n loud where they did a similar thing, they had to change the gearbox for a smaller unit as the shifter position was too rearward and the box was hanging out the bottom of the car, they cut out the underbody crossmember to fit a smaller box, I think its on series 3

Hey, the shifter is controlling a wire plus some electronics, it can really be anywhere, i'ts a horrible looking shifter though, don't want it in my car. I'm gonna figure out another way. And yes, the crossmember has to be modified, and a bit of the tunnel also. But for now I'm using my stock 727. But it can be done, check out this thread:

Have now ordered all my parts, EFI tank with pump from Tanks Inc. Sent my computers to Chris @ Hotwire for building a harness. Ordered the rest from Bouchillion, headers, radiator, engine mounts, CAI, PS pump, oilpan, bunch of small stuff, Randy there has been very helpful from the start of my project, answering my newbie questions for weeks before I decided, I can really recommend them.

Change of plans, (again!) I will skip the 727 step and go straight for the NAG1. I'll keep the 727 until the NAG1 works though, just in case. Lots of problems to solve now.

while your car is all apart now I think your making the right change going for the modern trans. Maybe when your deep into it you'll start second guessing yourself, but don't just keep pushing ahead. I too have been there second guessing myself, but this is ultimately what you want in the end. Do it now. The pistol grip shifter busted me up laughing, cool guitar too  I just started lessons, not working so good with my big fat fingers oh well I'll get it. Good luck to you.

Thanks! yeah, I think it was a good decision. Don't worry about big fingers, its really not in the fingers, its in the head. I got a buddy that has fingers like big hot dogs, and he is a great guitarplayer  .  I've been playing for 40+ years, got lots of cool guitars.

"Fingers like Big hot dogs" that's funny!  OK good to know I have a chance! I can't look at guitars because I will want to buy another one. Enough money right now is going to the car! Best to you!

Santa came early! All my stuff from Hotwire arrived today after a 3 week hold in customs. Good thing I got that big AC box out, gotta fit those 4 computer boxes and fuses/relays around there somewhere. Harness is looking good, nice work from Chris at Hotwire!

    sc, where do you plan on bringing the harness thru the firewall ?..

The hole is gonna be right behind the passanger side fuelrail. I have my AC outlets in that area now, or maybe above, gotta check the Vintage air install instructions, I believe that I dont need those AC holes anymore, think all in/outs on the Vintage air unit goes thru the fan cover plate.
