emax hotchkis challenger

did the people at hotchkis do anything special to make the 18 and 17 inch rims fit the car with those tires? or wopuld this fit a stock challenger?

Nothing special is needed to fit 17" or 18" rims. E-body's tend to work best with zero offset rims if you're looking to maximize your tire size. With a 17" rim you still have to worry about clearance on the outer tie rod end in the front, so the most backspacing you can run is about 5.25" regardless of rim width. If you're rebuilding the suspension it's best to go with offset UCA bushings at least (Moog 7103) so that you can have the car aligned to modern specifications, the original alignment specs are for bias ply's and are incorrect for use with radials. You'd want something in the range of -.25 to -.5* camber, +3 to +5* caster, and 1/16" to 1/8" toe in. And those specs would be difficult if not impossible to achieve without offset UCA bushings, especially if the car is lowered.

I run 17x9" rims with 5" of backspace (0 offset) and 275/40/17's on all 4 corners of my '72 Challenger. I did need to increase the amount of negative camber I was running because of a minor wheel rub on the passenger fender, and I removed the fender braces in the middle of the wheel opening because of my ride height (low!). Nothing that's visible from the outside of the car. In the back a 275 will fit with all of the stock suspension, maybe a 285 but it would depend on the car because of body tolerances. My car actually has a 1" Dr. Diff spring relocation with a B body rear axle, but that's not necessary for 275's. I have a ton of extra room I'm not using with my current combo.

Hotchkiss has said that nothing too outrageous was done to fit their wheels.

EMax fronts are 275-35 on 18x9 Forgelines.  I've got 275-35 on 9.5x18 in the front, slightly wider than the EMax Challenger, and no rubbing at all.  0 offset like 72bluNblu said is best, plus any offset from aftermarket brakes like DrDiff stage 3 or 4. 

EMax rears 295-40 on 18x10 Forgelines.  They won't give out specifics but gave a ballpark of 5.5" BS.  I think they are using offset springs.  I've got stock spring locations and I was able to fit 285-40 on 18x10s on the rear.

Hotchkis told me they had to modify the inner fender in the rear to fit those tires.  BTW, the Forgeline ZX3 wheels are 3 piece running around $1200 EACH.  There are other wheels out there that look similar at about 1/2 the cost.

Thanks dfrazz.  Good to know - seems like with a 1" spring offset the 295s would fit with room to spare.

Yeah, those Forgelines are expen$ive  :money:

I'm pretty confident that 295's won't work with the stock spring locations.

But, I've measured my car and I could run 325's with my 1" offset springs, no problem at all. 335's might even work. I have an 1-1/2" to the springs and the quarters on my car with the 275's. That leaves a good 2" for larger tires, and I haven't rolled the quarter lips or anything.

I am thinking 18's and 19's.

I agree, 295s are iffy with a stock setup.  When I measured for my tires, I could fit 295 but I'd have about 1/4" of clearance on either side with stock spring location and rolled lips - a bit too tight for my comfort. 

IIRC Goody has/had 295-45s out back with a stock setup Cuda.  I guess some cars have the room, other don't'.

From a Cuda perspective, 295's on a 10" rim will not fit unless a 1" spring location and a B Body housing are used, zero rim offset is a must (that is unless you want to roll the fender lips which I didnt want to. I have the above and its snug, no rubbing but snug, plenty of inner fender clearance, the spring is the limiter there.

FWIW, on a 9" wheel. I don't think I'd run a 295 on a 10", personally, it might add some response to the car, but the tire will be more load sensitive and likely break traction easier.

Hey Brad, would you mind measuring the tire side wall on that set up, that is put a straight edge across the sidewalls of the tire and measure down to the rim lip please.

I got 3/16"  on the front I get 1/4" (315/30R18) :wave:

I'm using Falken Azenis RT615K and they have a rim protector built into the tire , if that factors into anything?

I thought 285's on a 18x9.5 wheel would hit.  Do you think it would fit since you run a 295 on a 9"?
