426 hemi what is it worth
« on: October 20, 2015 - 09:17:58 PM »
got a tip on 426 hemi engine block date coded 1970. Mostly complete. Top of cylinders have been machined for o rings. Bore is 60 over. What would something like this be worth? Thanks for you time.

not much , @ 60 over the block is done unless you sleeve it , O ringed too so it has been run hard , any windows in it ?

I have to disagree with that.

.060 doesn't necessarily mean the block needs sleeving.
It needs to be sonic checked and let that be the judgement.

I'm at .063 over on mine.
Dave at Mopar Engines West said it'll be fine there was still enough that it would be O.K.

Even if you needed to sleeve the block that is only about $100 a hole. A properly sleeved block is better and stronger than a non sleeved block. Someone doing a restoration that needed a date coded block would pay quite a bit for that block.

True sleeving all 8 holes is expensive for most blocks but given the value of a 426 block it would be worth doing & it will be better than new . Just don't overpay for the block if you have to do that much repair on it & keep in mind a brand new block is not stupid expensive & is generally cast better with better strength & cylinder wall thickness . I would not run any block @ .060 without a sonic check , minimum is .125 on the thrust side .
IMO a date code block adds zero value to any car as it is still the wrong block & not the one the car was built with , to me a slant 6 car with a Hemi is no more correct than a Hemi car with a date code possible block , there was only one correct engine .

Always wondered this myself, the whole "date coded" block thing doesn't make sense. What's the point......
If it's not original I'd rather have a new block?
