340-4 340-6
« on: October 23, 2015 - 10:45:45 AM »
Does any one know the significance of the numbers 340 4 or 340 6 on the side of a 340 block?   had 2 340 blocks one had 340 4 on the side of the block the other had 340 6. What does the 4 and 6 represent?  4 barrel, 6 barrel?  Also the 340 6 block has a blank vin area, (replacement block?).

If it's what I think it is, this designates the casting run number, so the first was the fourth set of castings produced from a mold, and the second was from the sixth set.

:iagree:  Molding cast number.  Nothing to do with 4 or 6 barrel.

Yes, as stated it's the casting number.  Every time they make a change or repair to the casting they change the number.  No VIN stamped is most likely an over the counter block.  If it's a warranty block it would have the rivet tag or at lest the hole.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.
