Back at a again Can't get it cranked
« on: October 23, 2015 - 06:47:46 PM »
Pulled the coil out and move some wires over so I could weld underneath the fender.  Fender bracket had broke loose.  Anyway put it all back and won't fire.  Getting power to the coil  power on the negative side to.  New coil.  Although I have a MSD 6AL that hasn't been working right so I bypassed it and put in a new coil and it ran.  It doesn't have a ignition ballast as it was removed when the 6AL went in.  Also has the MSD distributor.  I went from a MSD 3 coil to a MSD 2 coil as that is all I could find in the part stores.  Any ideas.

Check the ignition box and all the electric parts, my voltage regulator was fried that way and I was lucky enough for not frying my msd6al in the process...

First, check the instructions on the MSD box and follow TS guide.   Its very easy to follow.   I had no spark and wet with gas plugs

BUT............The TS guided me to the point where the guide said the box was good, but I had bad coil.  So I changed the coil with a brand new one.  Still no fire: the     Prob came to that it was the MSD distributor:  Module went bad.    And you wont see anything in the MSD guides, box or distro, that will tell you if the distro is bad, or how to TS  if the MSD distro is bad

Bottom line, if ALL your wiring is kosher, if the box checks out good, the coil is good, and you are not getting fire, its the distro/  After doing a search, lotsa probs out there with the MSD distros

I had the msd 6al out.  Took the coil out.  Disconnected the negative on the battery.  But did not remove the ECU.  So how do I check the ecu.  I can't remember but I have seen I think on  msd web site on how to check the dist.  When I had problems before it was ok.  I will have to look also found my old post on all this so I have been re reading it.

I have the msd box out and have contacted the msd about sending it back to be fixed.  It didn't work is why I took it out.  I don't have a ecu, it was eliminated.  I have a voltage regulator.

I am getting 12 volts at the battery terminals.  I am getting 11 volts at the coil?  Is this normal?  I would I loose 1 volt.  Could running thru the relay cause a drop?

If I measure resistance across the + and - on the coil nothing with ignition off.  From the + or - to center gives me .5  If I have the ignition on I am getting 11 volts at either + or - .  Oh it I pull the coil wire and put close to ground no spark.  This is a new coil at least I have had the motor running with it prior to all this.

I have 2 coils  the most recent is a MSD 2   From  + to - at 200ohm setting I get 1:  from the center to + or - I get .006 at 2K setting
MSD 3 + to - at 200 ohms I get 1.3:  from the center to + or - I get .009 at 2 K setting

Any suggestions on whether either is good or bad?

The 6AL is your ECU.

Well I removed the 6al because I couldn't get it to run.  Bypassed it and wired directly to the coil.  It cranked up and ran.  So is the coil bad now?

fixed it  I grabbed the coil wire and was holding it close the engine but not close enough to spark but it shocked me.  I finally relized I should be smelling some gas.  Took the air cleaner off and the choke wire was off.  Pumped the linkage and had gas and a smell of gas.  The car set for 2 or 3 weeks without running.  I guess I needed to pump the accelerator several times and gets some gas in it.  Well this should qualify me for the dumbest mechanic of the week.  I should get some recognition for my stuppidty.  Been fooling with this car for a day and half.  Well let me tell you I punished that *****.  I probably smoked half the rubber off the tires.  Got it feels good to get the tension out.  My wife tells me over coffee before I got running and tells me that car is causing you to much tension.  I told it helps me to release my tension :cooldancing: :cooldancing: :roflsmiley: :horse: :horse: :horse: :horse: :horse: :horse:

I am curious how you got it to run by bypassing the ecu and wiring irectly to the coil.  :dunno:

Nice job there  But didn't you say you have MSD distributor?
