If your spindle inner bearing surface is 1.25 & the new bearing measures 1.375 than you need the sleeve...  The raised center of the dust shield you trimmed was likely your issue...
Yes, I now do remember Dr Diff telling me to do the same.....brain fade....I believe I used a drum sander on a drill press.....on my 71 I still needed the sleeves.

Regarding the brake shield, that could be removed as seldom do any new vehicles still use them... and the rotors will get better cooled without them.

Regarding the sleeve, I'm curious if they'll withstand long life and track durability (hard g-forces in cornering, braking, etc).... I intend to upgrade to the 11.75 brakes (not sure what calipers to choose or if adapters would be required using the 70-72 spindles... for Wilwood light weight calipers or factory heavy cast iron for the larger rotors)... I'd rather not change spindles if I can avoid it.
Autocross/road racers go in deeper... and come out harder!

I spent a number of years in a repair facility for a large bearing company.... I've seen similar bearing sleeves live in very harsh heavy duty applications, I'd have no worries running them for wheel bearings....

 Do these style of sleeves need to be installed with green Loctite or are they okay to leave loose? I'd think without some sort of adhesive, they would be prone to spinning.

Why would they be any more prone to spinning than the inner race of the bearing?

I don't know why but this idea of a sleeve doesn't sit right with me?  :-\   My " Spidey sense" is tingling somehow? It's likely to never cause an issue but for me I'd rather change the spindle , bigger is better sort of a thing I guess?

I wouldn't do it on a car I  intended to use hard, and would certainly try to step up in bearing size for that purpose,  but I can see it being a reasonable approach to a causal driver that only gets used a few months out of the year, but wants disc brakes under it.  A bearing sleeve, seal, caliper adapter, calipers, disc, and master cylinder and you can put discs under you pro parker for under $500.
