Say you wanted to spend up to $50,000 on a cuda (yea, it wont get you a hemi) and wanted to do it as a semi-investment knowing it will only go up in value, but at the same time, maybe drive it on a weekend or two a month, what kind would you get? 340 matching numbers? 440 matching? 440-6 matching? Hemi basketcase?

Get a 70 or 71 e-body with as big of an engine as you can!!  Numbers matching will help retain value more than a non matching car will!!  High impact color is a bonus too!!

Hello, I really wonder if the time to look at these cars as investments is over? The reason I say this is I am seeing prices flattening out and almost everyone that has the truely investment grade cars knows exactly what it is worth. To get a numbers matching big block or convertible you are going to have to pay top dollar unless you get REAL lucky and find the one in a thousand seller that does not know what he has. I am just wondering if there is much more appreciation left in these cars? If you keep a close tab on the eBay auctions you will see the same cars over and over again not meeting reserve. I was watching several of cars lately including a numbers, original 440 Challenger that struggled to hit 30K and did not sell even though the reserve was only 30.5K.  I have 5 70 Challengers, 4 of which are big block cars. I bought most of these cars as investments a few years ago and have been VERY happy with the appreciation but I am NOT seeing the appreciation in value I have seen over the last 2 years continuing at the same pace or at all. I myself think it is time to sell, not time to look to buy with the eye towards investment. Now if you are just looking for a cool car that will hold its value and be fun to own then that is a different story as there are a ton of Mopars for sale right now, but to look at these cars as investments I am not sure about. Anyone have any opinions? Also I am a hobbiest first and an investor in these cars second but when you have as much money tied up in cars as I do you have to keep your options open and not totally fall in love with them.
Thanks, Steve

I keep my eye on Cuda prices, and in the last 2 year they have only gone up and the parts too.
I look other places, and not epay that much. Legit AARs, 440+6, Hemis, even my 340 has gone up in a big way, not to mention clones.
Rarity of the car will keep prices sky high. I expect my Cuda to be worth $50.000 in the next 5 years. I'm just glad I don't have to buy one now.

I'm in it for the hobbie as well.

Go buy a Camaro, some savings bonds with the money you'll save & stop driving up the Cuda prices.

I think that the market has peaked. I don't think that you can go wrong with a numbers matching 70 or 71 (preferably a 71) but don't expect this car to pay for itself if you drive it at all. The insurance and upkeep cost will eat up any appreciation you have, not to mention the fact that in most states, you will be paying sales tax on the original sale (i.e. >5% on the cost of the car...$50,000 @ %5 is $2,500...ouch!).  Now, I don't think that the priice will go down if you buy right (i.e. straight, original, documented and well-restored car), but there is a real chance you would end up losing if you buy a car where the body work goes bad in a year or two...ouch!

If you buy one of these cars, buy it because you like it....if you want to make money, go buy real-estate or invest in a well-managed mutal fund...I know, you can't drive a mutual fund.

For a not-so-long-term investment the 72-74's are steadily increasing in value and are already bumping the 20k level and beyond. Same with the 68-69s.

If i had $50,000, id find me a good 71 cuda. And restore it how ever i wanted. It would be for my self. And if i ever did go to sell it it would be worth a ton of money no matter what i did to it.  :coffee:

ChallengerSteve,  I check the prices on 70-71 Cuda's often, not as much on the 70-71 Challengers but I do look at them from time to time.  The one thing that I notice is that every now and then even on ebay you see a decent challenger going for a fair price (notice I didn't say good price, no such thing in this market).  So it doesn't suprise me what you are saying about the Challengers and I would agree with your comments.  It doesn't seem to me aleast that a Hemi Challenger fetchs as much as a Hemi Cuda when it comes to selling price.  Please do not take that as a knock on the Challenger, that is just my preception.  I like the Challengers just as much as the Cudas.

On the Cuda side of things IMO the prices still seem to continue to go up, especially on the project cars which are quickly becoming barely affordable to the common folk.

If I had the money I would buy either an 70 AAR (my personal favorite) or a 70-71 440+6 car.

The facts are, most of us are living in houses  and driving cars that we couldn't afford to buy in this market.

buy low, sell high. maybe too late. I would suggest buying one you really like so if it flops as an investment you can still get some satisfaction out of it.  I knew a guy who had a whole shop full of hemi cars, he bought all of them in late 70's when ther value was lowest. I dont think he bought any for investment.
