Spare Tire

Did the spare in a 70 Barracuda have this white lettering on the tire from the factory?

I've seen a number of restored cars that have that lettering, and I think I've seen some pictures of spares in some survivor cars that had it.
However, I've had my T/A since '78 and I assume the space saver that was in the trunk when I bought the car is original to the car, and it has no size stenciled on the tread.

Only the collapsible - (space saver) spare tire had that. If you ordered your car with 14''s in 1970 and added the option of collapsible spare tire, you got what you see in the picture F-78 14 space saver tire. If you ordered (or had mandatory) 15'' wheels in your car, then you got mandatory collapsible spare tire with G-78 15 description on the space saver tire...

Every collapsible spare tire I've seen has had some sort of numbering on them...most were really faint and hard to see after 45 years.

Where Sylvain got those numbers from, I don't know. He must have copied one original example that he found, whether or not it's correct for every application...who knows.

Every one I've restored I've used Sylvain's stencils but not painted solid like above...I put a faint coat of off-white on them....the lighter the better in my opinion.

For what it's worth...I've never heard of a 15" collapsible spare ever being used on an E Body. Car's with 15" rims used an F78 X 14 spare IN MY OPINION

I'm sorry, I was confused with B-Bodies. Alan is right only F78 X 14 spare were used with E- Bodies.

What type of white paint do you use on the tire? I can not find a spray can of whit that sticks to rubber. Is this a special order paint? Thanks

I use SEM interior paint with their adhesion promoter  only because I have lots of it around

My cars is a long way from numbers matching so I don't care about that type of stuff.

I agree with what Alan has said: My original owner FM3 Challenger with E60's had the BFG f78x14 spare in it. I believe the lettering is supposed to be there but fainter than the photo as well. I responded on the other thread about the later Spacesaver value. Only my opinions though.

I bought one of these rims / tires for $200.00 how would I tell if its original???
