'72-'74 Challenger lower grille
« on: November 08, 2015 - 01:00:41 AM »
I need the plastic lower grille/valance insert used on '72-'74 Challengers.  I have three already: one's broken off at the end (the piece is missing), one's cracked with a minor warp, and one's badly warped on both sides of the center point.  I'm looking for one that can be used as-is at a reasonable price before I start trying to fix one of the ones I've already got.

What about taking a heat gun and un-warping it?

I did that with my Rallye cluster bezel with good results, but that's thinner plastic.  The warps, unfortunately, are right on either side of the center mounting tab, which might make it a bit tricky.  My main worry is that the heat needed to soften the plastic all the way through might bubble or deform the surface.  I'm actually thinking the cracked one might be easier to fix.  I'm finding that a surprising number of guys don't even seem to know this part exists, but I guess on the '73-'74 cars it's overshadowed by the additional front bumper overhang and it doesn't exactly stand out.

I see Tonys Parts has one available, looks like for $110.00

I purchased one from him a few months ago, very good condition and well worth it.

The one Tony had listed was gone.  They hadn't yet updated the site.  Sadness.

Still looking!

I'd fix the cracked one with pieces off the warped ones. Look into plastic welding, I did it on a 72 challenger grille and it came out great.

Yeah, that's where I think I'm going to land on this.  I can't believe they're this hard to find, other than the NOS one I found for $500.  That's just obscene.

Interesting side note:  Year One is the company responsible for the reproduction '72-'74 grille.  A friend of mine that worked there at the time picked up a cherry example at, I believe Carlisle.  It was part of a set, along with the lower piece.  He tried to impress on them that both pieces should be reproduced, but they decided to do only the upper--you know, the part that's almost never cracked, broken, or warped.  They had stacks of those they couldn't give away for years, and still have a bunch of 'em at like $140 last I checked.  My car came with four excellent ones.  The lowers, on the other hand, all seem to be damaged, and other than NOS I've yet to come across a really good one in almost two years of looking.  He just chuckles about it.  "I told 'em, you can't really do one without the other but they didn't want to invest that much.  They chose the wrong one."  Apparently the pristine lower disappeared somewhere in the depths of Asia, never to be seen again.

By lower grille I assume you mean the trim piece on the front valance. I need a new one as mine has a big gouge in it and looks terrible against my new bumpers. Can't find one.
