Seat belts smell like mold, how to get rid off?
« on: November 09, 2015 - 06:13:13 PM »
I've got a really nice compete 70 e body seat belt set that just smells moldy. They look great but really stink.

I got these about 10 years ago and they stunk then. Been in storage since. But time has done nothing to make the smell diminish. However they were stored in a plastic bag.

Any idea how to treat this set to get rid of the smell or do they need to get tossed?

Thanks,
Tom

I'd try ozium mist in a bag with the belts first... and then mabe a light scent free fabric detergent solution.  I would air dry on a flat board in the sun.

I've never heard of Ozium. Where can I get it?

Walmart or an auto parts store.  It is a deodorizer or "air sanitizer" as they call it.  I have used it in a couple vehicles that had water damage and moldy smells.  It works pretty well on a dried out moldy smelling car.  Don't sit and breathe it in though... I am not sure it is good for you.   :)

Those systems are great.  The ones I know of have Ozone generators and can get really bad smoke damage out of household goods after a house fire.  However, you can't breathe Ozone, and it is a poison... so it will also kill you.

Dry cleaning sounds great too!  I may dry clean my 'cuda seat belts when the time comes.

Throw them in the clothes washer/dryer with a lot of towels on a mild setting and do not use bleach.  :D

Clean first, then, to get smell out, put in a small closed space, like a garbage bag or something, with a bowl of concentrated vinegar in it, overnight, vinegar removes the smell.
