My reason for doing the upgrade is the fuel available these days.. I've had carbs since the 70's, I know how to dial them in pretty good but between the starting issues due to fuel boiling off & the drivability issues due to varying fuel quality plus the ability of EFI to keep the mixture corrected at varying altitude which is a huge plus since I live at sea level & I like driving in the nearby mountains on roads in excess of 7500 feet... Yes components can fail, the availability can be an issue but honestly the days of walking into an auto parts store & buying a carb kit are history too..... Plus the FItech unit uses common GM sensors & components so theres a good chance parts availability is actually better than the carburetor...
Oh & I've tried EFI years ago so I could easily be a big nay sayer but having made a living working on EFI systems from the early 80's till the late 90's I see them as the best upgrade going... As long as they work right.... My past experience wasn't good but I believe the guys from Fitech are doing a much better job..
HOLLEY PROJECTION
I ran a Holley Pro jection DFI system, it ran great....Sometimes...It had no memory capabilities, so the only way to find a problem was to be watching the laptop when it screwed up...If it were a hard fault, no problem, but intermittent problems weren't so easy...The first time I fired it up it had a failed injector...replaced TB assy under warranty...Next a intermittent air charge sensor, it was quicker to just buy one, only $50.00, running pretty good, took a road trip to LA, lost a MAP sensor about 15 miles from home, luckily it made the other 600 or so miles...Running good again, drove it most of the summer, not as consistent as the carter carb but way cooler to be able to pop the hood & say "Yeah its Injected"... Another road trip, Sacramento, on the way there I start getting a surge, about 40 miles from home the surge starts feeling worse, I pull off the freeway & the car dies...Call AAA & tow it home...Lost a fuel pump, leaned out & cracked a manifold...As it turns out the exhaust wound up fighting me for three years after that till I got both the warpt flanges & the other manifold replaced as well...You know the carter runs really consistent  I think FI is a good thing, I just feel Holley did a cheap half-a$$ job of it & used the cheapest components that the bean-counter in charge of purchasing could find...
Now that Fitech has put a system out for half the price of everyone else Holley jumps on the bandwagon & people say oh you should buy the Holley system they've been selling high performance stuff for a long time these guys from Fitech are newbies, a flash in the pan.... I say F@#k Holley these new guys actually answer the phone & in reality have been doing just EFI for a long time.... Most everything I read from guys who actually have bought the system has been very positive, the only issues I've heard of have been due to the surge tank "Command Center" which I won't be running anyway...
