Rallye Gauge Speedometer Resto

I'm trying to restore my rally gauge speedometer and it looks like I need to remove the front bezel (piece where the numbers are silk screened on) and it looks like it is held on by two rivets (see picture below).  I'm nervous to drill these out as I don't know how to reattach the bezel again.  Any one done this before or know how I can reattach it?

I've done this before on clocks and speedometers. Rather than drill them out I used a Dremel and ground down the rivets on the backside (where you're arrows are pointing) and then just punched them out.

I bought some of those small black semi-tubular rivets from Instrument Services. I also bought some extras from Mr HeaterBox in Ontario. His are a bit cheaper but they're brass and need to painted. For installation I used a center punch to open them up, then a flat punch to tamp it down. Be careful with what you use as a backing on the rivet's head and how hard you hit it so as not to damage it.

x2.  Great information, Jay!  I let AutoInstruments install mine after converting my clock to quartz since it needed to be refaced anyhow, but I wondered how I would go about it.  Now I know--which is good, since I have another Rallye clock that needs to be converted but the face is in good shape.  Thank you!

Not exactly my best job, but it works and holds. Being in Canada our selection of stuff can sometimes be limited. Maybe your Ace Hardware, or your Lowes might carry those small semi-tubular rivets.
