8 3/4 rotating resistance feels like to much
« on: November 14, 2015 - 11:23:37 PM »
Hi guys. I had the rear end jacked up to change my lug studs. Trying to turn my sure grip w/ 3.23 gears it felt like there was a lot of resistance turning forward and would not turn backward. Brake drums were off so no brake resistance with car in neutral. Is this normal.

As long as you are sure you were in neutral, I would have to say 'no'.

I think I will try disconnecting the driveshaft tomorrow to see if it might be in the transmission or if it is the rear end.

That's definitely not normal.  Turning one wheel should turn the other in the same direction and rotate the pinion flange/driveshaft with very little effort.

Ok took the driveshaft out I found resistance is in the transmission and the driveshaft is to long. I didn't even have enough room to get the u - joint out of the yoke with the rear end free hanging. Now to figure out what is up with the tranny.

What gear have you got?  More than a 3.55? Don't waste your time.... Depending on gear ratio it's pretty normal... Try the same test on another car with the same gear ratio...

Ionly have 3.23 gears and a 440 4 barrel. It's enough resistance that it makes my car seem sluggish. I am replacing the tranny this winter anyways. I have a spare so all should be good by spring.
