Accel 59300 distributor install question
« on: November 15, 2015 - 08:22:25 PM »
Just started the change from points to electronic ignition , using REV N NATOR and Accel  59300 distributor in 1968 440 .

After installing the Accel , the rotor is a couple degrees clockwise  from where the points rotor was.
Engine was not turned over.
Am I going to have to move each plug wire maybe one plug clockwise?
Or could this have been part of the hard starting and rough running problems experienced before?

Thanks for any info.

I would think if it's truly only a couple of degrees different just rotating the distributor will make up the difference.
I've seen similar questions where it was more like 45-degrees off & relocating the distributor drive made more sense than messing with the wires although that is an option.
Possibly finding Top Dead Center on the compression stroke of your #1 piston would be worthwhile to know exactly where you are while doing this.

BTW your photbucket album is private so will not allow viewing by us

Was hoping that may be the answer,
Will check TDC. Started to put at TDC first but took shortcut hoping would not move anything.
Will check the photobucket, was set to public but sometimes it doesn't work like that first time.

Set TDC , rotor still pointing between #2 and #1 cylinders.
Will pull distributor to check if drive gear slot is parallel to crankshaft per FSM.

I do remember the orientation of the new Accel rotor and shaft did not match the old orientation.
Will check the degrees difference.

With the drive gear off slightly, it's not parallel with crank at TDC, and new different shaft and rotor orientation, to me looks like either move the drive gear a tooth or so , or move the wires clockwise on the cap to compensate.

I moved the gear on mine because my distributor cap will hit the head so I had to orientate it to have enough adjustment. So if that is easier you can do that. If swapping the wires around works thats ok too. My wires wouldn't swap because of length.

Thank you for that confirmation.
I've read a lot of the threads on here about distributor install from points to elecronic ignition , watched videos, and am finally doing the install.

I finished the wiring to the ballast resistor today.
Set TDC , pulled cap and all was correct.
Engine started almost immediately and is running strong.
Will verify timing settings with timing light today.

Have a nice billet timing marker to put on.
