cuda bucket seat frame interchangability
« on: November 25, 2015 - 04:21:15 PM »
I have the hardback style seats in my cuda.  The driver's seat upholstery is frayed, and the foam feels as though it has lost is firmness.

I haven't been able to find foams for a 72.

So I'm considering using foams and covers from an earlier year, or maybe even B-body.  The seats in my 71 GTX appear to be very similar, and I actually like the upholstery better.

Does anyone know if the 72 E-body seat frames would accept foams from 71?

So your seats are like the 70 and 71 style with the plastic backs? If so, the foam/covers should be similar to fit. I was thinking a 72 would be like the 73 and 74 (no plastic backs).

I too have 72 seats with a hard back.  The early 72 seats with the hard back will be able to take the 70/71 foam but the later 72 seats with hard back will not.  I have the later 72 seats which will not except the 70/71 foam  :banghead:.  The way you can tell if you have early or late year model is by taking off the hard plastic back covering and see if you can see the seat frame with springs.  If you do, you have the early set, if you just see the seat frame and foam (no springs) then you have the later year version.

Hmmm.  The car is in storage for winter in a barn 20 miles from here, and I could get the seat backs off, but wouldn't be able to do that until at least tomorrow.  It was an April build, but now it's a Frankenstein and I don't know that the seats were original.  I've had the hard backs off looking for broadcast, but at that time was not in the habit of photographing EVERYTHING.

I was hoping to take advantage of Dante's current sale, which ends tomorrow, but I suppose I may have to wait.

I thought I read a thread where someone said the 72 MY switched to seats with no hardbacks.  If so that would mean 3 different seats that year?  Maybe I was hallucinating, I'll have to look for that again.

So, which seats do you have? I was pretty sure 72 didn't have hard backs but then you learn something everyday.

Hardbacks.  The upholstery is correct based on what I see as replacements available.  Just don't know whether I have "removable" foams.

Trying to attach a pic, but it's not showing in the preview.  Less than 300k jpg.

Another pic - seats out of the car.  The bottom of one may be answering the question to someone who knows which is which.

These appear to be the same as 70 seats; I suspect those foams and upholstery will work.

Okay, I misspoke a little bit earlier.....  70/71 seats can take the 70 foam.  Some of the early 72 seats have frame backs with punch outs that can accept the 70/71 spring baskets which can take the 70/71 foam.  Here is a post on Moparts which has some good pictures to see what you need to look for.

http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/1867201/Searchpage/1/Main/161731/Words/loco340cuda/Search/true/re-70-71-cuda-seat-frames.html#Post1867201

Either way if you have the early 72 seats with the punch outs you will still need the spring basket before you can use the 70/71 foam.

I'm at the point where i am thinking about just selling the 72 seats that i have and bite the bullet and buy the 70 after market seat frames and foam to get me the correct 70 seats that i need for my car.
