Starting engine on stand

Got a 340 that I wanna start without installing it in the car. My buddy has a startup stand for his race engines, he dosen't have a flywheel or bell housing to mount a starter for a small block though. Now, is there any other way to start a 340 on a stand, can I mount the converter and run it loose without oil (If I can get the starter temporary mounted somehow), or mont the tranny without oil? (727)
Can I use an air wrench on the balancer nut to start it? Any other creative ways?
Handcrank it?  :grinno:

Manual trans flywheel, bellhousing and starter.  Don't use the impact on the balancer bolt  :nono:

You want to do this correctly and not take short cuts or you WILL pay for it later. Go to the junk yard if needed and buy a manual tranny setup.

I would not try to use a converter on a flex plate with nothing supporting the weight of the converter on the rear I would think that could turn into a very quick lesson in physics

OK, I was hoping for a way witout getting the manual tranny parts, but I guess I have to do that, maybe I can borrow a setup from someone. You guys are lucky with your junkyards, in Sweden all there is in those are a bunch of Volvos and Saabs!  ;)

You just need a bell housing, Mopar big/small block flywheel is the same...  Assuming both are neutral balanced...  And the same tooth count  (130 or 143)... But honestly if your able to borrow a bell housing getting the matching flywheel would be the best option...
