These are all great explanations, great thread! One quick question for the OP and others... are y'all using the stock voltage regulator on the firewall?
I have back-asswards wiring done on my car. I have two voltage regulators.... the square back dual field alternator I have has a little bolt on regulator on the back of it. Now, rather than having 3 wires leaving the alternator, they all run to the little VR and one output charge wire leaves. It splits near the firewall and goes to the second voltage regulator and ignition and what not and fits into the factory harness. Confusing... yes, I know, it took me a while to figure out how it worked, but it does work.
Here's my dilemma... Do y'all have a wire going straight from the battery to the starter relay? My charge wire I described runs through the BH, Ammeter, and then back again like the factory did it. On the way back it hits the relay like it should, but rather than going to the battery it goes to the starter again first and then up to the battery. Can I still run the 8 gauge charge wire y'all have ran from the alternator to the relay?? Or does what I'm describing make no sense?
