Fuel system help????
« on: December 06, 2015 - 10:08:14 PM »
My husband and I are currently restoring a 1971 Barracuda. We are currently working on re-installing the entire fuel system, from the filler tube, gas tank, fuel lines all the way to the engine which is not yet installed. None of this was hooked up when we purchased the car. We have an idea how everything is supposed to go but we have been unable to find any exact instructions and we don't want to make any mistakes. This is our first restoration and we are learning as we go. So here are my questions if anyone can help!!!  :dunno:

1. Does anyone have any schematics for installing the fuel system including vent tubes, gaskets, vent line, fuel lines, etc? We have several books but none of them are very helpful and we want to make sure we do this right since you can't be too thorough with the fuel system. Any ideas?  :sadwavey:
2. We know that four of the tubes coming out of the vent tube connect with rubber fuel line to the gas tank. However, the fifth line runs up to the front of the car. Does anyone know where we can find this line pre-molded? We have found fuel lines, but not that fuel VENT line. Any ideas? ???
3. Once we run the vent line from the vent tube to the front of the car, where does this hook up? We have read about needing to also vent the carburetor bowl or something but we aren't sure what is accurate for the 1971 Barracuda that we have? Does anyone know specific to our car? :banghead:

Sorry for all the questions but pretty green here.  :grinno: We have amazingly managed to do a lot so far and have learned a lot but this one is kind of stumping us! :hyper: Help if you can please! Thanks!  :feedback:

inlinetube.com should be able to help with the steel line.

I think it went to a charcoal canister then a line went to the carb.

Thank you so much 73440, but our 71 Barracuda doesn't have a vapor liquid separator, or a charcoal canister. Ours just had one large vent tube (about 10" long) that mounts in the trunk with five little ports that come out the bottom. I think the hard vent line went up to the motor to some kind of port on the valve cover? This is where we are stumped... We know there was no charcoal canister or liquid valve separator, though. After that, we are kind of lost...

I will check out the website you gave me for the vent line! Thanks so much!

Not sure what set up you have ????

I had the following set up.... tank with several hoses, vents that ran to a large down pipe in the trunk ( see pic of tank with hoses,,,,that to the down pipe in the trunk )
I put a picture of my old tank..

69CHARGERMD,

I don't know if this is a California car or not, my husband would know that more than me.

Our vent tube looks like this:

The five little tubes that come out the bottom (through a hole in the trunk) will connect to the gas tank (four of them) with rubber fuel line and the fifth will run via a hard vapor line to the front of the car. This is what we aren't sure about.

It will probably end up looking like this in the engine bay but this is what we aren't sure about:

Does this help with what we are supposed to do????

I think this is similar to your set up but can't see the vent tube in your pic so not sure. If you have the same vent tube, how to you hook up the hard vapor line? It hooks up from the vent tube to the front of the car but to where? Is this where we need a fuel vapor separator with three ports on it that hooks into the valve cover? If so how does this hook up and what do the other two ports go to?

You're right that your car is a California emissions version. The system is called ECS: evaporative control system.  You're also correct that your car wouldn't have a charcoal canister. These diagrams from the '70 Challenger manual show the tubing routing to some degree.  The fuel line and the vent line run mostly parallel, but the vent line ends a little before the firewall where another tube is attached to it to head up to the breather cap.  Just buy two fuel lines from Inline and bend your own for the run up to the breather cap and the part by the vapor separator (right rear).  I might have one of those breathers with the three ports--I used to anyway.  We bought the manual years ago and it was our bible for putting our car together.  Lately, I found the whole thing online in PDF form on MyMopar.com, and that's what I clipped the diagrams out of.

FY1 Cuda and 69ChargerMD - huuuuuuuuge help guys thanks so much!!!!! That is exactly the info we needed!!!!! This puts together the missing pieces of our puzzle! Thanks so much for taking the time to help us out!!!! The pics were great and we will save them! We purchased a few manuals for our car but none of them were much help with this issue. Although they have been an awesome resource thus far, there wasn't much info on running an entire fuel system from scratch! Thanks again!

Actually, TelisSE440, that was an example pick! Our car is a '71 Cuda 440 with a custom blue flop effect paint job, and will have custom interior. We are restoring most parts OEM, with a few custom finishes. We don't plan to ever sell this as its a dream come true for us, so we are having some fun with it! But, yes, she is cool!!!!

I have the same setup on a 1970 383. looks pretty much the same as the pic with the small block in it. Breather cap has 3 nipples, 1 goes to the air cleaner , 1 to the vapor separator and one to the side of the carb. I have the 2 barrel setup ( Not for long) so I don't think that a pic of my carb will help you much.
